We recently connected with Nicole Potts and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
From childhood I was always creative and loved arts and crafts. As I got older I use to watch my grandmother sew and mend everyone’s clothes. Throughout Highschool I use to cut up and design clothes for school talent shows. I always wanted to do something to make my grandmother proud, and when I lost her suddenly I decided to start a clothing line in honor of her passing down that gene.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born and raised in Brooklyn NY and always had a passion for arts. Throughout my childhood and adolescence I use to sing and dance, so making costumes was something I got into because I love being creative. As I didn’t take sewing seriously until I lost my grandmother suddenly. It started off as a coping mechanism and I turned it into a business to honor her. I always wanted to make her proud because she was my biggest supporter

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Being authentic and compassionate about my clientele has made my business grow. I always put my self in the customer’s shoes and remain authentic. I’ve also grown to know that every customer isn’t going to be a ray of sunshine so I have to remain professional at all times. If I mess up an order I take accountability and come up with a way to rectify the situation. I will NEVER just take someone’s money without providing the best service that I humanly can.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn how to say “NO” just because I get an order doesn’t mean I can fulfill it for different reasons. Being that I make all my orders by hand and do not have a team, I have to allow myself grace to complete an order. If I keep accepting orders just because I want money I will burn myself out. In addition, I don’t like to tell someone I can make something if I know I can’t. That will create problems.
