We were lucky to catch up with Sylus Modlin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sylus, appreciate you joining us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest and most unexpected challenges I faced with 2-6 King Wavy Merch was when our Butter Moisturizer started melting during shipping in the summer heat. At that point, we were growing fast — orders were coming in from all over the country, and customers were posting reviews about how much they loved the results. But then I started getting emails and DMs from customers saying their product arrived melted.
At first, it hit me hard. I’m big on customer experience — every jar represents my brand, my name, and the trust people have in what we do. Seeing that happen felt like I was letting people down.
Instead of panicking, I took it as a moment to step up as a business owner. I spent days testing new formulas, changing how we stored and shipped our products, and even adjusted our packaging to handle temperature swings. I refunded and replaced every order that had issues. It cost me in the short term, but it built something much more valuable — customer trust.
That experience taught me that growth brings new problems you can’t always predict. But when you lead with integrity and actually care about your customers, those problems become opportunities to prove your brand’s character.
At the end of the day, my mission has always been the same: helping men build confidence in their appearance using natural haircare products that truly work. That situation tested my commitment to that mission — and it made me even stronger and more intentional about how I run my business today.

Sylus, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Sylus Modlin, and I’m the founder of 2-6 King Wavy Merch, LLC, a men’s natural haircare brand built to help men feel confident in their appearance while taking better care of their hair and scalp.
I started this brand out of personal experience. Like a lot of guys, I used to struggle with dry scalp, dandruff, and finding products that actually worked for my hair type. Most of what was out there was full of harsh chemicals that made my hair look good for a few hours but left it damaged over time. I decided to change that — not just for me, but for every man who wanted to look good, feel good, and use products made with natural ingredients that actually nourish their hair.
So, I started formulating products from scratch — ingredients like raw shea butter, coconut oil, avocado oil, and vitamin E. Over time, those formulas became what people now know as 2-6 King Wavy. We specialize in all-natural products like our Butter Moisturizer, Hydration Pack, Hair Growth Oil, and Shampoo Bar, all designed to hydrate, repair, and strengthen men’s hair while promoting healthy scalp growth.
What makes 2-6 King Wavy different is that we don’t just sell haircare — we build confidence. Every jar, every bottle, and every order is part of a bigger mission: helping men feel good about themselves when they look in the mirror. For many of our customers, that transformation goes beyond waves or shine — it’s about self-respect, discipline, and confidence.
I’m most proud of how far we’ve come as a small, independent brand. We started with no major investors — just a vision, dedication, and a community that believed in what we’re building. Now, 2-6 King Wavy has customers all across the U.S., from New York to Houston to LA, and we’re continuing to grow every month.
What I want people to know about my brand is simple: we care about results, integrity, and authenticity. Every product we sell is made fresh, chemical-free, and tested to deliver real results — not just marketing hype. My goal is to make 2-6 King Wavy a household name in men’s grooming while continuing to inspire confidence and self-care among men everywhere

Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
I sell primarily on Shopify, and I also sell on TikTok Shop, Google, and Amazon. For me, Shopify is home base — that’s where I control the brand experience. I built my business from scratch there, and it’s the platform that lets me own the customer relationship, my data, and my marketing. We also run subscriptions through Shopify, so customers who are serious about their hair care routine can get their products delivered automatically.
TikTok Shop and Google help us tap into demand and reach people right when they’re looking for solutions to hair concerns like dryness, 360 wave maintenance, and hair growth. TikTok, especially, has been a game-changer because our content already performs there — so turning views into orders feels natural.
Amazon is huge for credibility and convenience. Some customers just feel safer ordering through Amazon or they want fast Prime shipping — so being there helps us meet people wherever they prefer to shop.
Pros of this multi-channel approach:
• I don’t rely on just one platform — so my business is protected if algorithms or ad costs change.
• I meet customers where they already shop and consume content.
• More touchpoints equal more trust. When people see your brand everywhere, it clicks.
Cons:
• Managing inventory across multiple platforms isn’t always easy, especially with natural, made-to-order products like ours.
• Platforms like Amazon and TikTok take fees and hold funds, so cash flow can get tight.
• Each platform comes with its own rules and headaches — you have to really know how to operate in each ecosystem.
Overall, selling across multiple platforms has helped me scale and build real brand authority. But Shopify will always be home — that’s where the brand story lives and where we build long-term customer relationships

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn was thinking “If I do everything myself, it’ll come out right.”
When I started 2-6 King Wavy, I was the chef, the packer, the marketer, the customer service rep — everything. I thought being hands-on with every part of the business meant I was protecting quality and saving money.
But the truth?
I was holding myself back.
There was a moment that hit me hard:
We had a huge spike in orders from a viral video. I was up all night, mixing product by hand, printing shipping labels, answering emails, trying to keep up. My phone kept buzzing with new orders — which normally feels amazing — but instead I felt overwhelmed, stressed, and scared I couldn’t keep up.
That night, I realized something important:
Being the hardest worker in the room doesn’t build a scalable business — systems and people do.
So I started letting go.
I built processes.
I documented how products are made.
I hired help.
I trusted others with parts of the business I used to cling to.
The results?
Quality improved.
Customer experience improved.
And the business grew — not because I was doing more, but because I finally stopped trying to do everything.
The lesson I unlearned was thinking control equals success.
Now I believe leadership, trust, and process equal success.
And that shift didn’t just grow my brand — it grew me as a founder.
