We recently connected with Michael Marciano and have shared our conversation below.
Michael , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I began playing guitar when I was 11 or 12. Just listening to other guys in school talk about music and live music, performing and getting together and jamming. It seemed intriguing to me and I wanted to be part of that rock ‘n’ roll music scene. It was late 80s. And Guitar was having a moment, of course.
I began playing hard, rock and heavy metal. I did take lessons and learn to read. But somehow the reading in my lessons never translated to what I was doing on the guitar..
Once I was able to translate the music theory, I was learning into the live playing I was doing. My performance really took a lead forward.
That’s probably the one obstacle that helped me back was not finding a way to blend the theory knowledge and the Liv playing/jamming, rock solo.
I learned a lot by ear, and I wrote and, just reading tabs. It’s definitely helpful and nothing wrong with that of course. So many guys get so far with that. But for me, I just know that when my theory was kicking and my fingers understood at the same speed my brain could do that, I became a much better player.
It did take a long time.

Michael , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I fall in love with Music as a young age. I remember the first time I saw Guitar something clicked. It still took a few years before. I finally got my hands on one, but once I did, there was no looking back.
I started playing hard rock and metal with friends of mine in my teens. Later, I went to Music School and study at the crane school of music in New York State. I studied classical guitar music theory.
I have to get my degree. I moved to the West Indies and to music theory and classical guitar as well as jazz guitar guitar and bass guitar at the St. Lucia school of music.
Working here, I had an opportunity to join a band and play regular gigs out in hotels on the island and also do some touring around the Caribbean with some other bands. This is where I really learned how to play professionally.
Right now I live in St. Louis. I perform four or five nights a week as a one-man band. I incorporate Liv looping and electric guitar in my set so I sound like a power trio.
I offer a unique experience in that I play a variety of songs, and a number of genres of styles. Eileen, heavily on reggae, blues, Motown and funky stuff.
But I take requests and play just about anything I’ve heard or I’m familiar with.
I highlight exceptional guitar playing, or at least I tried to, with unique arrangements of songs that everybody tends to know and can tap their feet too.
I have a small band when I need one and I am so lucky to be able to make music part of my life and be able to make a living so.
My Guitar saved my life and it still does every day
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In addition to playing music, I was also in the construction industry. I was severely injured and had a number of surgeries culminating in a spinal fusion.
Music and playing an instrument was the one thing I had to get me through the months and months of recovery. Once I was able to walk again, I slowly developed the act that I bring out now.
My one man band act that I bring out and perform multiple nights a week is a combination of recovery, determination, and using Music as a force of inspiration to save me from a very desperate situation.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to be able to share music with others. I also teach Lessons.
I simply want to bring music to people, use the skills that I was blessed with and have spent my life working on. Music as a gift that should be shared. And if I’m blessed to be able to make a living doing so, my duty is to bring light to every room, with a little bit of the rhythm and song.
