Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Karen Hall. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, Karen thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?

I began with piano lessons in third grade and later started studying voice in junior high. At that time, voice science didn’t exist. What has been learned in voice science would have been an enormous help with my voice study from the beginning if it had been available.

Essential skills – talent combined with life-long hard work, sound technique, emotional intelligence, good advice and support (all kinds).

I didn’t come from a musical family and had to find my own way. That meant is took me a great deal longer to figure things out.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I have been singing since I can remember. Obtaining my doctoral degree from Columbia University, Teachers College, is my proudest achievement and the knowledge I gained is invaluable to this day. I pursued the degree to become current in my field (voice science had been developed after I obtained my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, to improve my writing, to become a better teacher and to learn how to conduct research. That degree provided all four of those goals in the best way possible. I am thankful every day for that experience.

We need music education in all schools and the private sector needs to go away. Everyone needs equal access to education.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?

Yes, the “money” types, for the most part, think artists are wasting their time. I disagree completely. Do I think I can provide insight into this topic? I’m not sure. On the flip side, the big music corporations, in my opinion, couldn’t care less about quality. If they can make money, they market and sell.
