Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hsien Ying Chaw. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hsien Ying, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I’d like to think that I’m happier as an artist. I’ve chosen a kind of challenge that I’m willing to invest my time, effort, and sacrifices in. This career brings me projects that feel deeply fulfilling — ones that allow me to express and embody more of who I am.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hello, I’m Hsieying. I’m a self- taught watercolor illustrator based in Malaysia, originally from a small town in Brunei. My work is rooted in gentle storytelling, often blending the natural world with surreal imagination. Through vivid colors, layered textures, and symbolic compositions, I create dreamlike illustrations that evoke wonder and nostalgia.
I enjoy working with water-based mediums like acrylics, gouache and colour pencils, which allow me to express my ideas on a blank canvas. What began as a weekend hobby has gradually evolved into a meaningful part of my artistic career.
Currently, I’m developing a personal project- a series of tarot-inspired illustrations that explore symbolism and intuition through my visual language.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
As a self-taught artist, my journey has been built on constant practice and plenty of mistakes along the way. I spend a lot of time painting, often learning through trial and error. There were times when I became a little too absorbed in my work, to the point it wasn’t always the healthiest balance. But those experiences taught me resilience and also to keep going, to slow down when needed, and to understand that growth takes time.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is seeing my messy sketches come to life in colour, just as I had envisioned them in my mind. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about watching an idea transform from rough lines into a complete piece. I also find joy in the problem-solving process while painting, and discovering new techniques or approaches along the way often inspires me for my next series. And of course, throughout my seven years of practice, hearing people express how much they adore my work has been truly invaluable. Knowing that my art can resonate with others in a meaningful way is something I deeply treasure.
