We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Laura Thomas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Laura below.
Laura , appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I began decorating cookies in January of 2020. I had just had my second baby and was once again struggling with my role as a Stay at Home Mom after being a performer for my entire adult life. There was a void that needed to be filled with something creative. Baking had always been a passion, and I started seeing all of this content on social media about cookie decorating; so I thought I’d give it a shot! My first bakes were rough, but I adored the challenge and kept researching techniques and gradually started improving. When COVID hit, it all came to a halt as I now had my preschooler at home as well as my infant. But eventually I started finding time to bake and decorate again. I made cookies for friends and neighbors until finally (thanks to support and encouragement from wonderful people in my life), I took the leap and decided to start taking orders. I love the challenge of building a set to cater specifically to a person or event and even though the circumstances are different, I feel like I’m performing again.
Laura , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I bake and decorate custom cookies for birthdays, weddings, baby showers and anything else in between! Custom cookies often have a reputation for being pretty, but not very delicious; but the taste for me, is just as important as the visual presentation.
I take pride in my communication level with each client to ensure that they will be satisfied with their order. In today’s economy, custom cookies are a luxury and I dont take it for granted when people choose to have me bake for their events.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Honestly, word of mouth has been the best marketing tool for me. Happy clients are the best way to reach new customers!
Have you ever had to pivot?
When I first began taking orders, I was going into the holiday season and got absolutely overwhelmed with the amount of cookies I needed to produce. Because I had a baby at home all day, most of my working time was at night and I would often stay up until 2 or 3 trying to complete orders, only to wake up a few hours later with my children. Absolutely not sustainable!
I had to learn what my limits were and that it’s okay to say “no”. I still have a hard time doing so because often the theme or design requested is one that I would love to do.
