We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Alan Ruffin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Alan below.
Alan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
I was thrust into what I do for a living. Growing up, I was obsessed with photos, magazines, and music. In college, I studied political science while playing in a band and photographing everything I could. Back then, it was an expensive pursuit because film was still the standard. I thought I might go to law school, but that never felt right.
After graduation, my band landed an indie record deal, so we moved to Chicago. I thought it would be for a few months, but when the band broke up, I suddenly had to figure out my next step. My first job was in my field of study, and I hated it. Fortunately, a friend worked at a major advertising agency and got me in as a project manager. But my heart was in design, not just watching others do it.
Breaking into the industry was tough, so I started doing contract work and went directly to businesses, offering to help with whatever design or storytelling needs they had. I had also taught myself to code websites back when Flash, HTML, and CSS ruled the web. That skill was in high demand, and soon I was designing, writing copy, and coding everything from websites to emails. while creating tons of print and collateral campaigns. I even began writing for radio and TV. The wide range of work helped me grow, and over time I became skilled at explaining how design drives business results.
Years of collaborating with business owners, executives, and creative teams, and reading everything I could about business and psychology, helped me merge strategy and creativity in a way that both designers and stakeholders could understand. That balance made me stand out. My first executive role was as a Marketing Director, which gave me a deep appreciation for strategy. Later, when I became a Creative Director, my ideas grew stronger, the projects became larger, and the momentum of all those experiences led me to where I am today.

Alan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a truly positive person. I believe that 95 percent of problems can be solved by bringing the right people together, breaking challenges into actionable pieces, and having the humility to listen, adapt, and pivot when needed. The goal is always the project, not personal indulgence.
I’ve been told many times by those I’ve managed that I’m a great leader. Like anyone, I’ve had big wins throughout my career, but I believe the journey is just as important as the destination. When I bring people together to create something meaningful, I focus on setting them up for success—and making sure they enjoy the process. That mindset leads to work that not only looks good but truly connects.
My teams have created campaigns that make an impact. I led the creative communications for Chicago’s COVID-19 vaccine response for at risk communities, helping the city become the first major U.S. city to reach its efficacy target. I also led the team that brought the Democratic National Convention to Chicago. And led an event company to expand it’s offerings; winning two omnichannel marketing campaigns. It was unexpected and that company’s first. This opened them up to an entirely new revenue stream. Creative leaders can also be revenue generators… or should be revenue generators… just sayin.
I think great designers and creative leaders can thrive beyond industries and verticals when they listen, follow the data, and stay fearless. As for my life’s work, leading the COVID-19 campaign stands above all. Our creative output didn’t just inspire, it helped save lives.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
My journey has been a bit unique. While some people come up through formal design schools and structured programs, my path was shaped by working alongside world-class Creative Directors and clients with incredibly high stakes. The design side came naturally, but the business side was something no school really teaches. When people are stressed and millions of dollars are on the line, you have to learn how to navigate those moments, how to read a room, how to talk about creative work, how not to take things personally, and how to stay motivated in one of the most volatile industries out there.
I often wished I’d had more guidance on those lessons because design is so much more than design. That’s why I created a resource for creatives. I wrote The Creative Survival Guide: A Comprehensive Guide for New Designers and Creatives to offer the kind of real-world advice I wish I’d had early on. It’s my way of giving back to the community and paying forward all the mentorship and support that helped me get to where I am today.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission, or what truly drives me, is to live authentically. I don’t separate work from life. I’m a creative, and it just so happens that I make a living doing what I love. Creativity is part of who I am, and that’s what makes me good at it.
I believe whatever you do in life should align with who you are. For me, that means creating designs and communications that move people. Just as importantly, helping others create great work, designs, and campaigns that are meaningful and even historic. I want to leave a positive mark on an increasingly cynical world, build things that last, and have fun along the way. It’s that simple: do the best I can for the people I work with and for, and enjoy the process of creating something that matters.
