Brittany, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I wish I had started sooner. Which I feel is a common answer but my reason is more about the state of publishing then a person one.
Publishing gets more and more competitive each year. Combine that with the saturated market and increase printing costs means manuscripts that would have easily sold ten years ago are not necessarily selling today.
Brittany, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a children’s book author, speaker, and writing & publicity coach.
My debut picture book IT STARTED WITH A P, a laugh out loud birthday-themed book, released earlier this year. I offer author school visits for K-3 and writing workshops on writing humor.
I started learning the craft of writing children’s books in 2018 and as I got deeper into the world of publishing the more I knew that I wanted to more within it then just publish my own books.
So in addition to being an author, I also help others on the road to publication. Whether it’s craft, finding an agent, securing a deal, or promotion. I have a very playful and strategic approach that clients are drawn to. I write funny book for kids and I bring that same enthusiasm into the business side of publishing and it makes the business side more palatable to creatives.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Take full advantage of your libraries! They offer so much for FREE. Not just books. And the more people utilize their resources the more they can provide.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Pivoting is essential to thriving! Originally I had set out to be a screenwriter and have a degree in Broadcast Media but a pivot brought me to children’s books and it was a much better fit for me.
