We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Aubrey Hunt a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Aubrey thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
I have learned many things over my 25 year career. I have learned the following:
No matter how hard you work, you are always replaceable. Use your vacation/sick time as needed. Take care of yourself so you can show up for others. I was laid off after suddenly losing my dad to suicide. I think it’s awful that we treat our mental health providers with such a lack of care and consideration.
Beware of those that gossip, they are more than likely gossiping about you too. I have definitely experienced this as well.
The work we do is challenging both mentally and physically. Find people who share your values and are willing to go through the hard times with you.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor. I have over 25 years of experience working with individuals, groups, and families with a wide variety of presenting issues. I also have certifications in various trauma and treatment modalities including; DBT, M-CBT, EMDR, Polyvagal, Internal Family Systems, EFT, and other therapies. I am currently the owner and psychotherapist at Aubrey B. Hunt, LCSW LLC, I am an adjunct instructor at Monmouth University, and I provide Clinical Supervision and specialized trauma services for a wonderful organization in NJ called Stone River Behavioral Health. I am so proud to continue be apart of this organization. They have restored my faith in person-centered treatment. We are all aware that healthcare is a business but, it feels great to be a part of the solution and provide good quality care. I am most proud of my healthy relationships and my ability to help others find a healthy relationship with themselves. Watching someone make progress and develop a sense of autonomy and authenticity is truly a gift.
I come from a person-centered, strengths based, and holistic approach to treatment. I use my clinical experience and skills to meet the needs of my clients. I have multiple, post-masters certifications, expertise, and sub-specialties. I offer therapy, coaching, and clinical best practices consultation.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I have always put the needs of my clients and staff above all else but, with reasonable boundaries. I have created and developed programs from scratch that had no guidelines or algorithm. I believe that coming from grassroots organizations and working in various different settings, helped me succeed and find other like-minded people.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Losing my beloved dad to suicide, this year, was a devastating blow as a mental health professional. I have dedicated my life to preventing this in others and I did not see it coming. As a trauma specialist, I have guided many clients through these types of losses but, I had a very difficult time reconciling it in my own life. I had so many unanswered questions and felt such a profound sense of loss and grief. I needed to take some time before rejoining the workforce as I felt emotionally and spiritually bankrupt. With time, grief work, and the support of friends/family I was able to have the post-traumatic growth and resilience.
