We recently connected with Mikka Chesno and have shared our conversation below.
Mikka, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I wish i started my creative career earlier. At the time I thought that it was better to study something I like and can make a living out of and so I spent my time getting into a nutrition and dietetics degree in South Africa and then in Israel when I decided to move to Israel instead of studying in South Africa. I now believe that I should have followed my real passion which is art and painting. I worked a lot and moved from place to place trying to figure out where I want to live. I ended up studying art in Jerusalem at Bezalel. I found Jerusalem a challenging place to be but overall the experience was good. I loved my teachers and the people I met. If I had started my art career earlier, I think I would have found my niche and place in the world as an artist by now. I would have chosen to move to Europe and study art there.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always been creative and arty since I was a little girl. I always excelled in art from primary school to high school. My family in Cape Town are truly my biggest fans (mainly because they see my art before anyone else does). Their houses are filled with art from many artists (showing their appreciation for art) but mainly my works. I’m a painter. I paint people, animals and scenes of nature and homes. I question love and society and imagine worlds where animals and people are more harmonious and loving. My paintings tell stories and bring light but also dark humour. My paintings’ sizes range from really small to really large.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal and mission in my creative journey is to discover new things about myself and my art through different experiences. I’d like the stories I tell through my paintings to become more complex and interesting through the people and places I meet.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There is something quite rewarding about the unpredictable outcome in my works. I like not to plan to much and see where my thoughts and flow takes me while I’m paintings. Sometimes I even go a little overboard but when I decide to stop paintings at the right time, the outcome feels like a real achievement.
