We recently connected with Camille Jeremiah and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Camille thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
Okay, Let’s start from the beginning! Starting my business was actually years in the making. I had a notebook that I would carry with me every day, I put all my ideas in from the business name to how I wanted to start it out. I had so many different names for my business before I decided on naming my clothing boutique Lady Blaze, For the most part it took long honestly due to fear. I think that is natural when wanting to start a business. Fear of if it would fail, Once I got passed that feeling, I set my mind there is no right time then now. Durning the pandemic I had lost my job and instead of looking for another job I said to myself it’s time. I went right away and did the mandatory steps in setting my business up online. the process was long but worth it. NO REGRETS!!
Camille, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well about me….My second job was working in a clothing store at the age of 18. But let’s take it back… When I was 12, I wanted to be a fashion model, I would practice my walk up and down, I even stressed to my mom that I wanted to model. So, when her friends that used to make clothes, wanted a model I would model for them. I always felt my love for fashion stemmed from modeling. I enjoyed watching fashion shows and being in them. When I worked retail, I made it my business to have conversations with bosses, I wanted to learn what I needed to do to be successful. Funny thing is at that time I didn’t think of using those pep talks for what I would end up doing later on in life. They say in order to be successful you have to be in a room with successful people. From there you have business conversations with those that have been through the ups and downs. How can you grow if you don’t take mental notes, right? I know that in order to succeed you have to keep competing with yourself, owning a business is far beyond the money you make but the love, hard work and dedication you put into it. It felt natural for me to start an online clothing boutique. As of right now It is only women clothes, but I plan to expand it, I started everything myself from start till now. No training manual, it wasn’t easy but giving up on this was not an option, and it helped that I have people in my corner that supported my dream.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There is a successful duo that I follow on instagram. The name of their business is called Bdonna. They have a book called The Boutique Bible. I promise you it’s the best book for an entrepreneur! it provided so much insight on starting my business and what I needed to mentally do. Those ladies are a gem. I hope to one day meet them and thank them for providing so much to start with!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
In the clothing business you need to be up to date with the timing and seasons! Let me be very clear, timing is very important! I can’t stress that enough. When I started my business, it was in July, and I provided summer clothes. I assumed because July is in the summer it wasn’t a big deal. I felt it would be fine, I didn’t fully think it through. I should’ve added back to school items as well. Because I didn’t, sales weren’t quite what I expected. I was disappointed but it’s a learning curve and you have to roll with it and most importantly learn from it.
