We recently connected with Odelquis Paramos Alvarez and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Odelquis, thanks for joining us today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
In July 2024, after many years of running the business, Mr. Julio Cavero, the owner of the business that I worked for decided it was time to retire. He began thinking about the future of the company and who might carry on its legacy. Without hesitation, he thought on me.
He approached me with an unexpected offer: to purchase the business and become the new owner.
At first, I was overwhelmed by the idea. Owning a business seemed like a huge leap—but deep down, I knew I was ready. After careful consideration and conversations with her now teenage son, who encouraged me to follow my dreams, I accepted the offer.
In August 2024—ten years after arriving in the U.S.—I officially became the owner of the bookkeeping firm where I once worked as a data entry clerk.

Odelquis, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As the new owner, I brought fresh energy and vision to the company. I invested in new software, expanded services, and introduced modern tools to better serve clients. But most importantly, I stayed true to the values that had helped the company succeed in the first place: accuracy, trust, and personal connection.
My story became an inspiration to others in the community: proof that with courage, hard work, and persistence, anything is possible.
Today: A Life Transformed
Today, I am a successful business owner, respected community leader, and proud mother. Her son, once a 5-year-old boy who came with her from Cuba, is now a young adult, preparing for college and deeply proud of his mother’s accomplishments.
My journey from single mother and immigrant to entrepreneur is a testament to strength, vision, and the unwavering belief in a better future. I didn’t just build a business—I built a life, a legacy, and a powerful example of what’s possible when you never give up on your dreams.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The Journey of Odelquis Paramos Alvarez: From Cuba to Business Owner
A New Beginning: December 2014
In December 2014, I, Odelquis Paramos Alvarez arrived in the United States from Cuba, full of hope and determination. I wasn’t alone—by my side was a 5-year-old son, the center of her world and the reason behind every step she took. As a single mother, I made the courageous decision to leave my home country in search of a better future—not just for me, but for my child too.
Arriving in a new country with limited resources, and the responsibility of raising a young child, I faced enormous challenges. But I was fueled by a deep sense of purpose. I knew that success wouldn’t come overnight, but I was ready to work hard, learn quickly, and do whatever it took to build a stable and fulfilling life for my son.
Shortly after arriving, I found a job at a small, locally owned bookkeeping company. I was hired for a data entry position—an entry-level, I had the knowledge and determination to grow within the field.
Balancing her new job with caring for my young son wasn’t easy. I juggled early mornings, late nights, school drop-offs, and work deadlines. But through it all, I remained focused. I was determined to not just survive—but to thrive.
My attention to detail, discipline, and reliability soon caught the attention of the company’s owner, Mr. Julio Cavero a Business Advisor who had built the business from the ground up. He saw potential in me that went beyond data entry—I had a sharp mind for numbers, a natural ability to connect with clients, and a strong work ethic that set me apart.
A Decade of Dedication
Over the next several years, I steadily advanced within the company. I learned everything I could—from bookkeeping and payroll to tax preparation and client management. I built strong relationships with clients and became a trusted part of the company’s operations. Few year later I was the company manager.
Outside of work, I continued to raise my son with the same care and dedication. As he grew, he witnessed firsthand the sacrifices and hard work his mother put in to give him a better life. My story was becoming not just a personal journey, but a powerful example to him of resilience, strength, and ambition.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation is your most valuable asset. Building it requires hard work, time, and patience. But when you consistently provide excellent service, offer value, and connect with your clients authentically, your reputation will grow, and your business will thrive.
