We recently connected with Jamar Jones and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jamar thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I’ve been running my business for 10 years—one decade. The question “Are you happy as a business owner? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to have a regular job?” really hit me. That’s super interesting because happiness as a business owner is something we sacrifice the most when building something. Especially as a business owner, it’s your baby. If you think about your family and having a child, you sacrifice a lot of your happiness to ensure that child is protected, well taken care of, and has the tools and resources to succeed in this world. The same goes for a business owner; you sacrifice again and again.
That happiness is so interesting because it’s not tied to money. It’s tied to fulfillment, lifestyle, and, at the end of the day, whether you are taken care of. I ran my business for about eight years, and everything was “go, go, go” the entire time. I built up a team of 15 people, so we had employees, payroll, a nice fancy office, and clients. We were moving, but we started to expand and do so much that I was always last.
The worst part is it wasn’t even about the money; it was the happiness. I was last in line, making everybody else feel welcome, making sure their dreams, goals, and aspirations were taken care of, and handling their family issues. Everything was being done for them, and that’s how you build a team. You want to build it for them. But if the main person of the business isn’t happy and fulfilled, and isn’t getting anything but absolute crumbs—even from what they’re building, which is an absolutely amazing, thriving business that employs 15 people—it’s not sustainable. If the core engine, the person leading the ship, is getting absolutely nothing or just crumbs and dust, and you’re pouring all your energy into others, it’s not sustainable. For me, I was doing that; I was pouring all my energy into others.I’ve been running my business for 10 years—one decade. The question “Are you happy as a business owner? I lost myself and my way into why I was even doing it in the first place. From all the accomplishments of doing huge conferences where I literally rented out a sports arena in Milwaukee, Wisconsin—from the Fiserv Forum to the Summerfest Grounds—to working with big brands like Tesla, US Bank, Red Bull, and VaynerX. Working with influencers and business moguls like Marcus Lemonis, Shea Rowbottom, and Jared Bush; all these accolades and achievements were amazing to everyone else on the outside.
The team was happy and excited, building towards something special, but it was at my expense. I asked myself, “What am I building this for if I am literally getting nothing out of it?” Of course, I’ve wondered, and I think every business owner fantasizes about what it’s like to just go back to a regular job because you don’t have all those responsibilities. You can literally clock in, clock out, and you don’t have to worry about your department’s stuff. You don’t have to worry about the entire business, where it’s going, all the different departments, and if everything is running correctly. It’s just like having a child; you’re constantly building and creating to ensure the child can sustain itself, and it’s tough. So I had this epiphany: “Why am I doing this?”
Once I moved down to Richmond, Virginia—Milwaukee, by the way, is beautiful. If you’ve never been to Milwaukee, definitely go in the summer or the fall; it’s absolutely gorgeous. Great establishments, great resources, visit Milwaukee, and a great place for entertainment is Potawatomi Hotel & Casino. A lot of business is there for entrepreneurs to meet and collaborate; it’s just a great place. But once I moved from Milwaukee to Richmond, Virginia, I definitely had this epiphany and realization that I needed to build this for me. I needed to ensure I was sustained and taken care of in my happiness, regarding the ultimate output of what I was doing.
It doesn’t matter that the achievements are fantastic; I need to build something that I’m truly happy and proud of, and that I myself enjoy the work. The goal of an entrepreneur or business owner is to build something that one day won’t need you, and I think we lose sight of that. So now, my happiness is tied to things like restructuring. We got rid of a lot of services we no longer wanted to provide and got hyper-clear on our focus: targeting and helping entrepreneurs, coaches, authors, speakers, and podcast hosts. We help them grow their credibility and revenue, and ultimately their personal brand, truly with the power of changing their circle. That focus, intentionality, partnerships, and everything we’re working with now is streamlined in a way that’s built on the principle that I, as a business owner, need to be good to truly help others. This is a great time to take this reflection and look at your own business and say, “Am I building something that can no longer need me at some point? Am I happy with what I’m doing right now, and is it truly where I want to be? Am I taken care of?”

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

If you’re looking for a partner who will help you clarify your message, expand your reach, and connect you to real opportunities, Foureva Media is here for you.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What helped me build my reputation in the market is overall my brand positioning. This is something that we help coaches, speakers, podcast hosts, authors, and entrepreneurs with because it is the key to unlocking real opportunities and becoming a magnet for those opportunities. I call that the credibility gap. A lot of people know you and kind of know what you do, but there’s a huge gap between that and being a magnet for real opportunities, for them reaching out and trusting you with those opportunities for business, partnerships, collaboration, et cetera.
The credibility gap really boils down to trust and positioning, so you have to fast-track that trust as quickly as possible. To do this, you need to work on your brand positioning so people see you as an authority and someone who is already trusted and vetted. You need to prove that you are the best choice for the job or opportunity. There are many ways to do that, but first, it’s about being intentional. When I meet somebody new, why would they choose me? What are they looking at first? What do my social media pages look like? What does my website look like? Is it really sharing a story and a message that connects with people to show that I am the right choice for those magnet opportunities?
A lot of us need to get really clear on our message, who we serve, and really talk about the transformation. We also need to double down on our social proof: videos, testimonials, quotes, pictures, and really hone in on showing that we actually know what we’re talking about and that we’re credible. Our positioning of getting us aligned with other people and partners or other influencers or people that are recognized in the space that you’re in, who are also trusted by a lot of people, also shortens the connection.
That shows that we know what we’re doing, the type of clientele we’re sharing, and always sharing customer experiences and the transformation they’re getting—the real results. It’s about constantly showcasing it, but being intentional about how I can put out so many things that shorten that credibility gap.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective way we’ve been able to grow our clientele is by putting out content that attracts the right type of avatar we’re going after. This means speaking their language, addressing their problems and pain points, and showcasing that we have a true community where others trust us.
We can’t achieve this without credibility. People need to experience Forever Media. We want them to experience what we’re doing, because once they do, they’ll be hooked and want to get involved. We then quickly answer how they can get involved, how we can help, and how we can pull them into what we’re doing.
Getting on as many stages as possible is crucial. This includes digital, virtual, and real stages such as podcasts, LinkedIn Lives, and Instagram Lives. Anything that gets you in front of many people is what you should focus on. If you can speak on three different stages every week to an audience of five to 5,000 people, it’s worth your time. It only takes a couple of people to enter your ecosystem, reach out, and discover more because you’re getting in front of more people. Stages equal a bigger audience; instead of going one-to-one, you’re going one-to-many.
This has been an effective strategy for us. Additionally, collaboration and partnerships with the right organizations are vital. You can give immense value to these organizations, and they have the right audience you’re speaking to, which helps them discover you. This creates great partnerships.
