We caught up with the brilliant and insightful BJ Sam a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
BJ, we’d love to hear about when you first realized you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew I wanted to pursue music professionally when I was just 15. I had joined an international classical choir, and standing on stage surrounded by beautiful voices awakened something inside me. It wasn’t just about singing—it was about discovering a part of myself I hadn’t known existed. I realized I could tell stories, convey emotions, and connect with people through music in a way nothing else could. That was the moment I knew I couldn’t imagine a life without music.
As I grew older, my vision expanded. I began blending Afrobeat rhythms with global sounds, collaborating with musicians from different continents. People started calling me “Sammy Wonder”—a name that reminded me I was carving my own unique path.
A major milestone came in 2017 when my song “Mon Amour” was chosen by filmmaker Lloyd Kaufman for the Hollywood movie Heart of Fatness. That moment was more than recognition—it was affirmation that every late-night rehearsal and leap of faith had been worth it. Music wasn’t just my passion—it was my purpose.
Even today, as I travel and collaborate with artists around the world, I carry that 15-year-old spark with me—the realization that music gave me a voice, a mission, and a way to connect hearts across the globe.

BJ, can you bring our readers up to speed on who you are and what you do?
I am BJ Sam, a Nigerian-born international singer, songwriter, producer, and educator, widely recognized for my passion for uniting people through art and culture. With a voice and style that transcend borders, I have collaborated with artists worldwide to create music celebrating peace, love, and unity.
Beyond music, I am also an academic expatriate with extensive teaching experience, from primary schools to prestigious universities across different countries. Whether through melodies or mentorship, my mission remains the same: to inspire, uplift, and connect people from all walks of life.
Today, I create songs that blend Afrobeat rhythms with global sounds, aiming to uplift and inspire. What sets me apart is my dedication to authenticity and collaboration—merging diverse traditions with modern influences to craft something truly unique.
I am proud of many milestones—having Mon Amour featured in a Hollywood film, performing on international stages, and connecting directly with fans through social media.
Most recently, my song “Don’t Worry, Everything Will Be Fine” reached an exciting milestone in the GRAMMY Awards journey. Initially submitted for consideration, it has now advanced to the official ballot in the Global Performance category. This honor reaffirms my belief that music is both my passion and my purpose, and I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey.
Ultimately, I want people to know that my music is created with intention and heart. It’s about connection, joy, and shared human experience. When you listen to my songs, you’re joining a journey—feeling emotions and sharing stories that transcend borders. Music is a bridge, and my greatest hope is that it inspires, heals, and uplifts everyone who listens.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes—my mission is to use music as a bridge connecting people, cultures, and hearts across the world. I aim to create songs that not only entertain but also inspire, heal, and uplift. Every melody, lyric, and collaboration is guided by the desire to bring joy, hope, and unity to listeners.
For me, music isn’t about fame—it’s about impact. Whether through blending Afrobeat with global sounds or crafting songs like “Don’t Worry, Everything Will Be Fine,” my goal is to remind people of our shared humanity.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is bringing smiles to people’s faces. When someone tells me that a song lifted their spirit, gave them hope, or reminded them they’re not alone—that’s worth more than any award. I create not just to entertain, but to inspire and unite. Knowing my voice can bring joy or encouragement to someone across the world is the true reward of being an artist.
