We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Robert Page. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with robert below.
Robert, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I am self taught. For whatever reason the desire to create; the desire to paint has always been there. As I have gotten older I’ve realized how creative a lot of my family were. From my dad’s dad to my mom’s mom. My grandfather made whimsical folk art after he retired. I imagine he had other creative pursuits as a younger man. But he also had a family to provide for. I didn’t really know him before he was gone. My grandmother liked to draw. My great uncle was a painter, and my mother liked to write and had an eye for fashion and design. I wonder if living in the south and if they had more opportunities to explore their creative wants. but that was a different time. I spent a lot of time learning different styles of painting, studying the old masters. I’ve always had a passion for realism above other styles.

Robert, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been painting for at the point most of my life. I am a traditional oil painter with a modern slant. As of the past several years I have moved into more large scale still life. Mostly foods. From large scale pizza slices to sushi rolls. I think this is what sets me apart from other contemporary painters. Not that large scale paintings of food is anything new. It just isn’t as common as say other subject matter ruling the current art world. I guess I am and will always be a step behind the trends.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
The struggle is real….in so many ways. I’ve taken my son to the art supply store a few times. And he’ll stand there looking at me holding up a canvas next to another or me looking a two different brands of paint that are slightly different in hues.
he would say; “come on, pick one. They look the same.”
I bring this up because in the same situation taking he to pick up a video game and I’m the one standing there saying “pick one, they look the same.”
So, we all have our thing. Some people have art. Some have video games. Some have sports, etc.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being about to see the world in different ways. In some ways I think everyone having a smartphone with a camera has gotten everyone in a creative mood. And we all have found new ways to see the world around us.
