Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kara Mae. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kara Mae , thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I live in a tourist town and noticed a real need: grocery stores are far from the rental cabins, which makes it difficult for guests to get everything they need for their stay. I had been thinking about starting a business that would allow travelers to arrive and find their cabins stocked with groceries of their choice. While developing that idea, I met my future business partner at the farmers market — she was looking for a project and we quickly realized our visions aligned.
Together, we came up with a new idea: instead of just stocking cabins with groceries, why not provide fully prepared, from-scratch meals that guests could reheat and enjoy at their convenience? This way, visitors could truly relax, spend time together, and not be stuck in the kitchen. That’s how Vacaytering was born: we stock the fridge, you chill. Everything comes in reheatable pans, so guests can enjoy delicious meals without worrying about prep or cleanup.
When my business partner moved away, I chose to carry the vision forward on my own. Since then, I’ve grown the business into catering weddings, business lunches and other special events, while continuing to focus on helping people connect over food in a way that’s effortless, comforting and thoughtful.

Kara Mae , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Kara Mae, the creator of Wooden Spoon Provisions. I’ve always loved cooking and hosting, and I wanted to create meals that bring people together without the stress of prep or cleanup. Living in a small tourist town, I noticed guests at rental cabins often spent their time shopping and cooking instead of enjoying their getaway, that’s how the idea for Wooden Spoon Provisions started.
We provide fully prepared, from-scratch meals that are easy to reheat and serve, whether for cabin stays, weddings, business lunches or special events. What sets us apart is the combination of convenience, care, and using local ingredients. Every meal is crafted to be comforting, thoughtful and memorable. I’m proud that we help people connect, relax and truly enjoy their time together.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building an audience on social media has been a mix of strategy and intuition. I quickly realized that people eat with their eyes, so I focus on making the food look beautiful. Visually appealing images tell the story before anyone even takes a bite. Over time, I’ve also learned that it’s okay to be quiet sometimes; you don’t need to post just for the sake of posting. I share content when I genuinely have something to say or something meaningful to show.
My advice for those starting out is to focus on quality over quantity. Invest in good visuals, stay authentic to your brand and remember that it’s better to post intentionally than constantly. People respond to honesty, care and creativity. That’s what builds a loyal audience.

Have you ever had to pivot?
A major pivot in my business journey came when my partner, who had helped launch Wooden Spoon Provisions, moved away. Overnight, I found myself taking full ownership of the business, including stepping into the chef’s role, which had previously been her domain. I had to trust myself, learn new skills, and grow in ways I hadn’t anticipated.
Through this challenge, I expanded the business beyond stocking cabin fridges to catering weddings, business lunches and special events. I’m really proud of how I trusted my instincts and pushed myself out of my comfort zone. This experience has taught me self-confidence and that some of the most rewarding growth comes from embracing new responsibilities.
