We were lucky to catch up with Chelsey Coffin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Chelsey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The inspiration for Sweet Pineapple Spa comes from my parents, who owned their own business and taught me the value of creating something meaningful and lasting. With family roots in Hawaii, I wanted my spa’s name to reflect that connection while still standing apart from the typical ocean and beach imagery often tied to island culture. My parents named their business Da Coconut Cafe, and I loved the idea of continuing a tropical theme in my own way. After researching, I discovered that the pineapple symbolizes relaxation and calm—two qualities at the core of a spa experience. It felt like the perfect fit, combining my heritage, my family’s influence, and the serene atmosphere I strive to offer every client who walks through the doors of Sweet Pineapple Spa.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The story of Sweet Pineapple Spa begins with a leap of faith. After graduating high school, I went to community college, unsure of what career path to take. My mom, who has always been one of my biggest inspirations, encouraged me to pursue cosmetology. I took her advice and enrolled in school on O‘ahu, Hawai‘i, where I fell in love with the industry.
When I returned to California, I started working in a nail salon to get my foot in the door. For four years, I gained valuable experience and learned the ins and outs of the beauty business. Then life changed—I became a single mother to my first son. With a five-month-old baby in my arms, I knew I needed to create something more for us. That was when I decided to take the risk and start my own business.
Like most new ventures, the early years weren’t easy. Building clientele took time, and the arrival of COVID-19 brought even more challenges. But I stayed determined. I wanted Sweet Pineapple Spa to be more than just a nail salon—I envisioned a full spa experience. After years of specializing in nails, I went back to school and became a licensed massage therapist. That decision transformed my business.
Clients quickly embraced the new services. Many loved being able to enjoy a hot stone pedicure followed by a massage—a way to experience a spa day without disrupting their busy schedules. As my offerings expanded, so did my business, and alongside it, my family grew with my fiancé and our two boys.
Today, Sweet Pineapple Spa is more than just a career—it’s the result of resilience, family inspiration, and a drive to provide. I’m proud to have created a space where clients can find relaxation and calm while I continue building a legacy for my family. What started as a way to provide for my son has grown into a thriving business that reflects both my roots and my passion for helping people feel their best.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me has definitely been word of mouth. When clients leave feeling relaxed and cared for, they naturally share their experience with friends and family, and that’s been the biggest blessing for my business. Positive reviews have also made a big difference, since so many people search for local spas online. Altogether, it’s really been the community support and authentic client experiences that continue to bring new faces through the door.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been focusing on building genuine relationships and creating an experience clients want to come back to. I’ve always believed that if you provide great service with consistency, people will not only return but also recommend you to others. Offering unique packages—like combining a hot stone pedicure with a massage—has also helped, because it gives clients something special they can’t always find elsewhere. For me, growth has really come from staying true to my passion, listening to what clients want, and letting word of mouth spread naturally.
