We were lucky to catch up with Dr. Pietro Emanuele Garbelli recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Pietro Emanuele, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started you own firm sooner?
Occasionally I catch myself thinking “I wish I had started as a healthcare consultant sooner / when I was younger”, in particular when comparing myself with who exclusively provides those services; in reality, the 20+ years in clinical practice in acute internal medicine, and the experience in several medical leadership roles, helped me both to build a solid foundation of real-life experiences and to refine the ability to address problems from different points of view, which leads to a completely different approach to what is normally found in the market. If I hadn’t witnessed and lived through several challenges and learned from it, my offer would have been much more limited. The principles I apply I share in my books The Doctor’s Voice and The Doctor’s Future: for example, in order to achieve purposeful transformation in healthcare a collaborative approach is paramount, as well as empowered clinical guidance and efficient bidirectional feedback mechanisms, and a clear vision is the starting point. Not having been time and time again at the receiving end of poorly planned, poorly executed transformation programs would have not only taken away motivation, but also learning and reflection opportunities. Also, clinical skills such as observing, listening, asking powerful questions and “connecting the dots” can be a diagnostic powerhouse when applied to healthcare organisations rather than just human beings.

Dr. Pietro Emanuele, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am known as a specialist in acute internal medicine with over two decades of clinical experience, having served in medical leadership positions, as the Author of two multi-award-winning bestselling books (The Doctor’s Voice and The Doctor’s Future), creator of the Healthcare Convergence Framework™ (HCF) and founder of Transforming Healthcare Ltd.
“Thriving Healthcare Strategist” sums up my key offer to healthcare organisations’ executives and decision makers looking to make the most out of AI/Robotics in healthcare with clarity of vision, identifying and addressing possible risks and pitfalls, fostering engagement and designing bespoke future-proof governance structures. What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
It’s a progressive journey: for sure, sharing ideas and learning points in books which then received multiple literary awards, good editorial and reader reviews and reached bestseller status on Amazon played a prominent role. Building a presence on social media, engaging in interviews, podcasts, sharing positive reviews and testimonials, networking and connecting with other leaders in the healthcare industry, all contributes to building authority and being more known. Ultimately, it comes down to being authentic and of service to others, being open to opportunities and working hard on the background!

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
The morale of healthcare workers is sometimes assumed to be at an all-time low, but then challenges increase and it drops even further: working in ever-worsening circumstances is simply not sustainable, and sacrifices and hard work need to be balanced by tangible improvements and rewards. What might work temporarily to tame the flames might not work in the long run to extinguish the fire. Taking action to reduce healthcare workers pain points (frustrations, inefficiencies, excessive bureaucracy, etc) goes a long way: choose wisely when allocating budgets to “wellbeing” initiatives!
