We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Nashey Perry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Nashey , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I started my business at the peak of the Pandemic, and to be honest, I wouldn’t change a thing! Before May 2020, I spent most of my career in corporate freelancing my marketing services and waiting for the “right” time to take the leap and start my business. As fate would have it, my dream soon became a reality once laid off due to staff reduction. Initially, I was scared, but after much thought and prayer, I knew this was divine confirmation and alignment. Had I done it sooner, I would have crumbled because I did not know how to pivot and if I had waited, I would have played it too safe.
Nashey , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a Dallas native that has resided in Houston for the past five years. Before starting my business, I worked in the technology and oil and gas industry and often freelanced and volunteered with nonprofits. That is how I developed my passion for creative work and impacting the community positively.
I work with service-based professionals and organizations to help them build their brands and grow their businesses with top-tier content marketing.
My most recent achievement was working with the Houston Area Urban League on their 2021-2022 Annual Impact Report Design. It was such an honor to see the final print at the luncheon. Most of my work is service-focused, so being able to see people holding and reading the report was a special moment for me.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I quickly had to learn how to pivot because it was a virtual assistance agency when I started my business. At the time, this was a new concept that many did not know about, and I spent more time convincing rather than converting clients to book me. Plus, there was a lot of competition, and I had to go back to the drawing board to see what made the most sense and dollars. After much prayer and research, I saw an uptick in content marketing and scaled my services and knowledge into that field. I believe it is vital to know how and when to pivot your business. Assessing your industry’s demands and measuring the market value of your business will help you understand just when to do so.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson I had to unlearn was that working long hours puts you ahead of the game. This concept is far from true because what ends up happening is you either burn yourself out or overwhelm your team. When I started working for myself, I had so much imposter syndrome because I felt I wasn’t doing enough. I struggled for a while with what productivity looks like for me in this space.
