We recently connected with Sandra Burlizzi and have shared our conversation below.
Sandra, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Thank you for the warm welcome! I’m truly excited to share my journey with all of you. The most significant project I’ve worked on to date is undoubtedly the group I founded in Abu Dhabi, known as Re_Creation. This initiative embodies several interconnected meanings that resonate deeply with our contemporary experience. At its core, Re_Creation serves as a catalyst for personal growth and introspection—encouraging individuals to “re-create” themselves in a world that often demands constant adaptation.
The notion of taking a break, or stepping back from the chaos of daily life, is integral to this project. In today’s fast-paced environment, we frequently overlook the importance of pausing to reflect and recharge. Re_Creation offers a sanctuary where participants can engage in hands-on activities and creative endeavors, allowing them to reconnect with their passions and aspirations.
Additionally, the group’s emphasis on creativity—whether through art, craftsmanship, or innovative ideas—fosters a supportive community that encourages self-expression and collaboration. This multi-faceted approach not only empowers individuals to carve out a dedicated space for themselves but also cultivates a collective spirit of exploration and innovation.
The idea for our Women’s Group in Abu Dhabi was born out of a personal challenge that many expatriates can relate to. When my husband’s job brought us from Italy to the UAE, I faced the daunting task of leaving behind not only my career but also my support network of friends and family. It was a significant adjustment, and I knew I wasn’t alone in feeling this way.
Recognizing the unique communication needs of women in similar situations, I decided to create a space where we could come together to share our experiences and support one another. Six years ago, what started as a small gathering of four women in a café blossomed into a community of 250 strong, diverse women from around the globe. Our initial discussions focused on cultural and linguistic exchanges, allowing us to learn from one another while fostering a sense of belonging.
As we grew, I realized that many women in our group had incredible skills and stories to share. By integrating these talents into our meetings, we transformed our gatherings into dynamic sessions where everyone could contribute, learn, and thrive. This collaborative spirit has not only empowered our members but has also cultivated enduring friendships and a strong sense of camaraderie.
Today, our group stands as a testament to the power of inclusivity and respect, showcasing how women from various backgrounds can unite to create something truly remarkable. We celebrate our diversity while supporting one another in our personal and professional endeavors, and I couldn’t be prouder of the community we’ve built together in Abu Dhabi.
Sandra, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Absolutely, I’d be happy to introduce myself!
I was born in the picturesque seaside town of Brindisi in Southern Italy, a place that holds a special piece of my heart. Growing up in such a vibrant and sunny environment shaped my character significantly, but I found career opportunities to be somewhat limited. At 23, driven by love and ambition, I relocated to Northern Italy in Gallarate, where I embarked on a fulfilling career in the furniture industry—an area I’ve been passionate about since childhood.
In my professional journey, I wore many hats, working in both sales and accounting. These experiences not only brought me great satisfaction but also laid the foundation for my later role as a Marketing and Communication Consultant. This position allowed me to specialize in rescuing struggling companies on the brink of closure, connecting manufacturers directly with consumers. My strong communication and organizational skills were essential, and I found immense fulfillment in helping businesses thrive.
Aside from my professional pursuits, I’ve always had a love for the arts. Singing and writing have been a significant part of my life, giving me the opportunity to perform in clubs and public squares—experiences that have been nothing short of exhilarating. I’ve also published several books with various publishing houses, which has allowed me to express my creativity in different ways.
Throughout my journey, I’ve moved with my husband as his career took us to various locations, ultimately settling in the United Arab Emirates. Here, I channeled my passions and skills into establishing a non-profit initiative called Re_Creation. This vibrant group is dedicated to creating a collaborative space for women to stay active, reinvent themselves, and unleash their creativity. I pour my heart and energy into this project because I believe in its potential to uplift and empower women, creating a community where imagination and beauty flourish. It’s not a job for me; it’s a mission close to my heart!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
At the core of my creative journey is a profound mission: to combat loneliness. I strive to create a welcoming environment where each member of our group feels invited into a small, nurturing community—one that offers a sense of belonging and a piece of the home they may have left behind.
The activities we engage in are thoughtfully designed to foster genuine connections. Whether it’s cooking and sharing meals—evoking the warmth of gathering in a beloved family kitchen—or learning about new languages and cultures, these experiences help us grow closer and feel more at ease with the adventures we share. My goal is for everyone to learn and inspire each other, pushing boundaries through creative pursuits, be it painting, singing with talented instructors, or even participating in lively events like masquerade balls.
Crafting something tangible, such as a crochet bag, might seem daunting to some, especially those who haven’t engaged in crafts before. Yet, we’ve seen remarkable creations come to life, showing that the hands can indeed be a second brain, guiding us in ways we often overlook. Each moment spent creating is treated as a precious gift. We also tackle contemporary topics, such as the impact of artificial intelligence on our lives, fostering discussions that ignite curiosity and critical thinking.
Re_Creation serves as a form of therapy, particularly evident during the Covid pandemic. Through Zoom, we maintained our connections, navigating feelings of isolation due to separation from loved ones and the grief of lost family members. Our support for one another during that challenging time became a lifeline that underscored the importance of community.
In closing, I resonate deeply with a quote I came across: “The mind is like a parachute; it doesn’t work unless it’s open.” This encapsulates my belief in the power of creativity, connection, and the willingness to embrace new experiences.
