We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Justice Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Justice below.
Hi Justice, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
When I was in high school there was around 25 boys team throughout Oregon and Washington plenty of competition and skills out there. fast forward 10 ears later there are only 5 between boys and girls teams. that decline in the amount of rugby being played and enjoyed was heart breaking so I started asking around and came across something interesting there was no media presence what so ever and if their was it was club based so something needed to be done and one day I was sitting going through YouTube and instagram I saw an opportunity to do something about it.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
my name is justice johnson I’ve been playing rugby for 15 years now and have played against teams from all over the world. rugby is my passion its what saved me from a terrible environment filled with gangs drugs and a lot of lost souls. I was headed down the wrong path getting caught up in the street life just trying to make it day by day, one day a group of guys pulled me to the side after school and just asked me what I had planned for the day in my mind it was going to hang out with people who were no good for me, they asked if I heard of rugby and to my surprise I not knowing it was an actual sport I’ve seen a rugby ball before in my earlier years, so when they told me to go with them to practice something pulled me towards it. I never looked back.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
after high school I had plenty of opportunities to play for different clubs and was getting recruited by a team from Wales and from a few colleges here in the us, but with those opportunities I needed a way to pay for the plane tickets even looking at one way tickets it was way more money than I had at the time so I ended up playing for a local club and I broke my leg in the third match playing with them. that took about a whole year and a half before I even looked at a rugby ball. I was devastated my dreams of continuing on in rugby where over so I thought. after a much needed break one of my friends from high school messaged me to come back out this time for a different team after having surgery for a broken fibula and not knowing if I could run the same I took on the challenge to keep playing rugby a sport I love and in doing so I broke every screw left from the surgery and honestly might play a little better for it.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I started by pivoting from different career paths but taking the knowledge that I gained from them, it took about three months of research and trying to put together the perfect post and I came across a video from a guy who just posted work out videos and he said “stop worrying about what to post and if people will like it, post your content and continue to post every day.” so I made my first post and have continued to post consistently and my following has grown every day hitting goals I didn’t think I would make. I went from worrying about if anyone would ever see my posts to reaching over 30,000 people monthly.
