We were lucky to catch up with Joshua Jasper recently and have shared our conversation below.
Joshua, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
The most important piece to an individual’s success starts with their intentions. Many people hear the word success and correlate that with a monetary value. My perspective of success was finding something that makes me happy while being able to help others simultaneously. The moment I picked up a camera, I knew this was it. I’ve always enjoyed capturing moments and I was always aware of how important it was to be able to have these memories not only to relive the moment, but to have them for when we lose our loved ones. My intentions were always to capture every moment as if it were the last time everyone in a room would see each other. It wasn’t to land the highest paying clients, or to rack up money off of a gig, it was simply to give people the best memory they can possibly have during the moment that I am present with my camera. This mind state has taken my passion to a level to where I can now support the lifestyle I desire to live. It all started with being intentional,

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
The first time I touched a DSLR camera, I was planning to drive my car back to Los Angeles, after graduating from Morehouse College in Atlanta, and I remembered my grandmother having a Nikon D90 collecting dust in her garage. During this drive back to Los Angeles, I stopped in New Orleans, Houston, Austin, and Phoenix. I took photographs in each of these cities and completely fell in love with photography. I immediately found a software that I can edit my photos on and the love grow much stronger after seeing the results. As soon as I got back to Los Angeles, I made an Instagram page for my photography and began to post pictures. The pictures that I would post were captioned to be relevant to the story that I was telling, although it was a still image. I used my Instagram to showcase my work and I would reach out to my followers to assist me with creating stories. I landed my first booking, and after the first one, they began to come consistently. I started off by taking donations and I used the bookings to master my craft. Having a 9 to 5 job, I was able to combine my savings with my donations and I bought my first professional camera. Having this camera, I went from donations to $50 shoots. I still used my bookings as an opportunity to get better but with this new camera, I can truly story-tell by having a video feature. What I first thought was Love with photography, I now felt like I was obsessed with videography. Moments I captured at events gave my clients a feel as if they could relive these moments eternally by having a recap video put together by me. I’m always a fly on the wall and there are no moments that I miss. I make sure that I capture every event or moment as if my clients and their families may never see each other again. My business has scaled tremendously, and I now work alongside people that I have looked up to my entire life. I have not only scaled my own business, but I have scaled businesses to higher levels by producing eye grabbing content.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is being able to create memories for families as they enjoy their loved ones. There have been so many situations where a client of mine may have lost a loved one and my photos or videos are the only memories that they have with these individuals and they have thanked me for creating such a beautiful memory that they can have forever with those loved ones. It is always a blessing to hear how I have exceeded expectations with the work that I produce. Although I now live the life that I desire, the happiness and joy of my clients after they receive my work is the most rewarding aspect of being a creative.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission that fuels my creative journey is to give my kid’s an example of how finding what makes you happy can turn out to be rewarding. I have my Master’s degree in public administration but I am full time with my business. My kids will see that although an education can be rewarding, you don’t have to attend college to be successful.
