We recently connected with Megan Kearns and have shared our conversation below.
Megan, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later?
I launched my graphic design business at 21, though my path toward design began a few years earlier when I enrolled in an Advertising and Graphic Design program at 19. From a young age, I was drawn to both art and helping people, but I lacked the confidence to imagine a creative career as a real possibility. After high school, I initially pursued nursing because I believed it would allow me to make a meaningful impact. While I respect the profession, I quickly realized it wasn’t the right fit for me. I’ve never been comfortable watching others in pain, and I struggled with the more difficult realities of the job.
What first drew me to nursing was the idea of advocacy: giving patients a voice and being there for them when they needed support most. When I discovered graphic design, I had a pivotal realization. I didn’t have to work in healthcare to help people. Through design, I could combine my love for art with my desire to advocate, this time for business owners. By creating strong visuals and clear messaging, I could help them tell their stories, amplify their voices, and connect with their communities.
Looking back, I’m thankful I started when I did, as each step, nursing included, shaped the perspective I bring to my work today. Still, I sometimes wish I had believed in myself sooner. Even as an early teenager, I knew creativity was what I loved most, and starting earlier might have allowed me to grow faster in the field. In many ways, though, the timing was just right. The journey gave me both the confidence and clarity I needed to build the business I have now.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
As the graphic designer behind MK Designs, I specialize in brand identity, social media content, packaging, layout, and website design. My approach isn’t just about making things visually appealing; it’s about helping businesses shine. I invest in understanding each client’s vision and challenges, ensuring the design connects meaningfully with their audience and supports their success in today’s competitive landscape. In a world where brands often struggle to stand out or communicate consistently, I focus on creating design systems that bring clarity, cohesion, and confidence to their message.
My approach is also rooted in the same dedication and drive I developed over 16 years as a professional speed skater. Training nearly every day and earning multiple national championship titles instilled in me a belief that success comes from discipline, consistency, and unwavering commitment. That mindset now guides the way I work with clients, combining creativity with strategy to deliver high-quality results. I pride myself on being a designer who not only creates compelling visuals but also provides a thoughtful, seamless process that helps businesses amplify their voices, strengthen their brands, and achieve measurable impact.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe what helped me build a strong reputation in my field is the effort and dedication I put into every project. I’ve always given 110 percent, with the goal of leaving each client not only with great design work but also with a positive experience that helps their business grow.
A major turning point in building my reputation came during school. Even after finishing assignments, I continued designing at home, pushing myself to learn more and refine my skills. That commitment paid off when I graduated at the top of my class and earned the curriculum award. Beyond recognition, it left a lasting impression on my teachers, many of whom began referring clients to me after graduation. Some of those referrals remain clients of mine today.
Connections and word of mouth have been the most powerful tools in building my reputation. By consistently delivering quality work and meaningful results, I’ve been able to create strong relationships that continue to open doors and grow my presence in the design community.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part of being a graphic designer is seeing my work out in the world and knowing it is making a difference. There is something surreal about visiting a business I have partnered with and spotting the branding, packaging, or materials I helped create. Even more meaningful is hearing directly from business owners about the impact my designs have had.
What inspires me most is turning ideas into something tangible, watching a vision take shape and become a tool that helps a business grow. Every time I see that transformation, it reminds me why I love what I do. It is not just about creating visuals; it is about creating moments of real impact.
