We recently connected with Sara Hess and have shared our conversation below.
Sara , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
Wow this is a loaded question!
I honestly believe it’s depends on what your description of success is. For me in my business success is leaving an impact on every client that sits in my chair. You can have the best business in the world and not be successful. At the end of the day I want each client I’ve had to be able to say wow there’s something different about her. She loves her job. She took time for me. She left an impression on my life and I have to tell others about her. I want my clients to come into my space and know they are important and I’m here for them!

Sara , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been in and out of the beauty industry my entire working career. I have done many things from selling makeup to managing a salon. I finally decided after years in between working in cooperate world and being a stay at home mom for 10 years it was time to do something I loved! I had to get back into the industry! I decided to train to get my certificate in permanent makeup. I began my training 5 years ago and haven’t looked back since. I have since been trained in eyeliner, lips, tiny tattoos, and piercings. I also have a mobile unit where we do pop ups and markets! Yes that’s right… you can come to my mobile unit at an event and get a tiny tattoo or piercings! I have recently added forever jewelry to my service list. I feel this is a perfect addition to my brand. I want every client who steps into my studio to get the vibe of a place they can come to enjoy some “me” time and leave feeling confident and a boost of yes I am worth it. Either through a word of encouragement or a new piece of jewelry or fresh ink!

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I believe in every successful business you are going to experience some resistance from time to time.
I have had this dream of taking my business to the next level and adding a mobile unit. I had some push back from the county I wanted to get listened in. I never gave up. I kept telling myself there has to be a way. I’m a firm believer in if it’s meant to be it will be. I continually negotiated and stood firm on my passion and point as to how and why this would work. It didn’t happen over night. There were many phone calls, emails, and searching that went into this. I finally was able to prove my point and get a license for my mobile unit which is only the second mobile unit in Ohio. Giving up will get you no where!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I will say I love watching other artists not to copy cat, but to learn from them! What works for them? What doesn’t? I have also realized what works for them may not work for me. I am very confident in who I am as an artist and I always say I know I am not the BEST artist out there, YET, but my goal is to be! I love people I care about people and I am who I am and clients can feel that! Clients what an artist who is a straight shooter. Someone they can trust and rely on! Authenticity is HUGE in being successful in business!
