We were lucky to catch up with Megan White recently and have shared our conversation below.
Megan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Crooked Creek Highlands began in 2023 but our story began much earlier-over a century earlier. 173 years ago our farm was established by John A. Somers in Somers Township which is now Hamptonville, North Carolina. John A. Somers was my ancestor and it was here he put his roots down and began his farm. Our land has changed over the years as it was a lumber mill at one time but mostly the land has been used for cattle farming. Sadly, North Carolina is losing farm land only second behind California. Our farm is recognized and was awarded a North Carolina Century Farm for the preservation and history of our farm.
Starting in 2023, we began raising Scottish highland cattle and decided to open our farm to the public. So many people never get the chance to interact with farm animals or learn about farming. Our goal is to educate the public on such a beautiful and historic breed. We love sharing our animals with the public and creating memories that last a lifetime.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Megan White. I am a licensed attorney in North Carolina but in 2022 moved back to my family’s farm land in Hamptonville, North Carolina. Since 2023, I founded Crooked Creek Highlands to share our highland cattle with the public. Our farm offers educational and interactive farm tours where guests get to brush and meet highland cows. We also offer a variety of events including paint parties, yoga, workshops, and photography. Our events are unique and one-of-a-kind. We are leaders in the industry of agritourism.
Along with hosting events, we also breed Scottish highlands and Nigerian dwarf goats. We take pride in raising great animals that would be a great addition to other farms. We strive for great genetics in our cattle and are continually adding to our herd.
Our social media accounts including Instagram, Facebook, and Tik Tok are a fun way to see the cows, as well. We share adorable content for viewers across the United States.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
When I began our social media account, it was not a farm page. It was actually a page dedicated to building our farmhouse but as I started posting, I posted more and more about our two highland cows, Strawberry and Butters. We continued to add cows so I continued to post them and our adventures. I shared videos and photos of authentic things happening on our farm which I believe helped us gain followers. I posted on a regular basis and worked to think of creative ways for people to meet our cows. Our accounts have grown because people have gotten to know our cows and love to follow them. My advice is to keep posting real content and sharing what you love!

Have you ever had to pivot?
For eight years, I practiced law as a family law attorney. When our second child was born, we moved back to my family’s farm in Hamptonville, North Carolina. Due to the distance from work, I stepped back from my role and into full time management of our farm. It was certainly a difficult choice both financially and emotionally but I also knew it was the right choice. Our farm, animals, and my children needed my time and attention. While I am still licensed, I currently don’t practice but rather run Crooked Creek Highlands, LLC.
