We recently connected with Jaclyn Salts and have shared our conversation below.
Jaclyn, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
Some of the biggest trends I see in my industry is the quest for sustainability and low maintenance gardens. I find this really encouraging because more natural gardens leaves a lot more opportunity for beneficial insects and wildlife. One of my favorite projects to date involved transforming a large manicured front lawn into a pollinator garden. My client rejoiced the following season when she had numerous hummingbirds, butterflies, and birds she had never seen before.
A common misconception about these low maintenance gardens is that they require absolutely no maintenance or water. Weeds are definitely still a thing and with regard to water, there is a huge difference between a garden that is barely surviving as opposed to thriving.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into landscape design after watching the town I grew up in rebuild after a devastating fire. After going to CSU, I worked for various commercial and residential companies in Texas, California, and Colorado.
My personal passion is definitely trees and I love the chance to educate my clients and see different trees all over the Front Range. Thoughtfully placed trees can be such a legacy for a property. They add beauty, structure, a sense of space, and cool the environment.
As a designer, I take a holistic approach to gardens, seeking to maximize function and achieve the homeowners desired aesthetic. I view my designs as a partnership with the homeowner and I am always available to answer any questions or visit with them long after the design is complete.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
I started my business on a shoestring. I rented out my place and stayed with family to minimize personal expenses. I used equipment I already had and was very careful on any subscriptions I invested in. I managed to become net positive in just a few months and have been growing ever since!

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I focus on the relationship more than the individual project. This helps create trust with clients as they know I am invested in the long term success of their landscape. Gardens are always evolving so I feel it is important I am there for them! Often I have clients that give me referrals for years after their project has been complete!
