We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Derrick Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Derrick thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
Personally it would be awesome if family and friends would support any content and or ideas I have. However it’s important to understand that this is my business, content, idea alone. I feel that when we seek friends and family’s support constantly, we are forgetting the fact that they too have lives to live, ane may also have projects they too or working on.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Clever Sound Productions & Derrick Brown Is the brand I represent well as own. Through both entities I create music and sell products online.
I first started creating music in 2017. Working in the music business really requires a lot of work if your doing all on your own. I’ve chose the alone to learn and hone my skills both on the creative side well as the business side. I still have much to learn but I feel that when a great opportunity arrives, I will be ready.
For any all potential clients/followers/ and want them to know that when you support me, we as a whole will grow together.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Most people think it may cost a lot to create and make music, but the truth is for as little as $9.00 you do it and have on multiple listening platforms for streaming and sells.
Then you can find other platforms that’ll meet your budget to promote work. Now I don’t have thousands of dollars laying around to really push my work, because mortgage and other bills come first, so I use money from my job (Walmart Distribution) to help assist with my growth.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
This goes back to support. I use to think once I release a song every is going to be buying, playing, or sharing it. But this is by far from the farthest.
So now when I release music I do it hoping it reaches someone he needs and wanna play it. This keeps my mind from cloudiness and allows me to create my music with worrying who is supporting me and who’s not
