We recently connected with Erin Blue and have shared our conversation below.
Erin , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Okay so I have these thoughts veryyyyy often. A lot of us creatives go through similar thought processes when it comes to that particular choice we made originally. For me, this is my passion. I literally could not imagine doing anything other than creating a soundtrack to the lives of others. I couldn’t see myself NOT giving all of my artistic energy to someone just to see them smile. However, full transparency? It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life. It’s easy for some people to just go to work & make a living and be satisfied. I’d have stable income, yes. But would I be fulfilled? Would I feel like I’m living out my purpose? Last time I worked a full time job, it took away from my creativity. The only time I had off the clock was for my children and sleep. It made me depressed. I wasn’t walking in my power! Everything isn’t for everyone was the conclusion I came up with. So I’m going to live life how God intended. I’m going to UNAPOLOGETICALLY live out my dream.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Mmmm so for those who don’t know, my name is Erin Blue. I’m what we like to call a VIBE CREATOR. I’m a soul singer, songwriter, hostess, content creator, entertainer, and radio show host of “Happy Thoughts with Erin Blue” on WDRB Media via iheartradio. Y’all can catch me every Friday morning 6:30 AM/EST (shameless plug lol). I’m originally from Wyandanch, NY—that’s a small town located on Long Island. That’s where I originally began singing in school and local churches. Joined a couple of groups, one specifically; One Kutting Edge, gave me most of my live music experience. We toured the tri-state area performing reggae, calypso, jazz, r&b and top 40. Shortly after, I relocated to Greensboro, NC and been here doing my thing ever since. I recently dropped my first project in April and I’m superrrr duperrrr excited about it. It’s called “Out of Stock” because babyyyy, the cloth I’m cut from is clearly no longer made! One thing that makes me stand apart is the fact that my brand embellishes imperfections rather than hides them. Nobody’s perfect so I try to show that there’s beauty in the small things that make us unique. The small things that we might hate about ourselves—that’s the part we should love THE MOST. Yeaaaa so, that project is on ALL streaming platforms. I’m extremely proud of the work that was done; shoutout to Jimmy V & Teddy for all the help—I love y’all. And there’s something for everybody on there so I hope y’all enjoy it!! Oh! Oh! And I’d say one of the things I’m most proud of besides this project, would be opening for keynote speaker Michael Eric Dyson at a gala in Syracuse, NY. An amazing and highly encouraging soul to have met and keep in touch with!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
This is good lol this is really good. One thing I feel is hard for a non-creative to completely comprehend, is how much work goes into what they see on the surface. For instance, you might come across a 30-second trailer for a song your friend is releasing next week. In order to post just that 30 seconds, they had to first record the song, then hire a videographer if they don’t have one already, get a new outfit (women need makeup & wardrobe usually), find the perfect location and lighting, shoot the perfect shots & angles, get everything edited….you see where I’m going here? It’ll take someone hours to days to weeks to get something right, just for you to be entertained for 30 seconds. Haa..
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
One of my main goals on the road to success (and everyone’s view of success IS different) would be to be the person I didn’t have—for someone else. I had to do ALOT on my own and still do! If I had a mentor or someone who went through similar experiences just reach back and say “Hey, here’s how”, I feel I could’ve been further along. I’m not upset at how God is moving though, everything is in His timing and I’m with it! So with that being said, I feel like we go through things so we can help the next person. That’s what I’m doing. It’s not easy being an independent artist, everyone doesn’t have a team. There’s so many of us that deal with broken promises and snakes in the grass. I want to be that breath of fresh air for someone. If I can help point someone in the right direction to help them level up, I’m a happy camper. That’s just one goal tho Lolol!
