We recently connected with Kate Holliday and have shared our conversation below.
Kate, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I love being an artist and honestly couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I get to constantly work with new people, travel and create the most amazing projects. Most importantly, I have freedom. I have the freedom to choose my clients and have the freedom to determine my own schedule. I recently worked part time in a talent agency as the New Faces Director, and though it was part time, I still had to adhere to a somewhat consistent schedule. I loved being there to help guide talent, especially ones who where new to the industry, but the office time and paperwork really took its toll. Ultimately it wasn’t for me and I left with a renewed sense of purpose and inspiration.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I first started working in the fashion/entertainment industry when I was a teenager, so it’s been a long time! I started out as a model and actor. I love performing whether it’s on a stage, or in front of a camera. That led me to my love of photography, and most recently, directing. When I decided to got to college, I knew I wanted an art degree. I attended the Savannah College of Art and Design with a concentration in Photography. My studies allowed me to dive into the things I really love, like art history, color theory and graphic design, along with photography. I use all of these references in my work. I am a visually driven person, and typically have a clear vision with my projects. I think my ability to jump back and forth between being in front of the camera to behind it gives me a different perspective. I would definitely say I lean more towards an editorial point of view. I also love movement and raw, unrefined spaces.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist has to be when a project is completed, and my clients are happy. Sometimes, in the beginning, it can be a challenge to convey your vision, and it’s really only when the project is fully completed that it makes sense. So when it’s all said and done and my client is fully satisfied, that it’s all worth it. I really want to give more than 100% on each job, so I do what I can to make that happen!

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I’m driven by knowledge and curiosity.. I love learning something new and applying it to my next project. Whether it’s an editing trick I just learned, or a lighting technique I’ve wanted to try, I’m constantly pushing myself to exceed my last project. I think it’s important to grow as an artist and stay curious!
