Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to SURFACE GREY. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi SURFACE, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on would have to be my latest project, “Da Green Tape.” Many don’t know I had an environment for this project way back in 2022 and the idea came to me after a weekend long stay at home! I been holding onto the idea for 3 years just slowly but surely perfecting and crafting the project with each precise touch. The original name of the project was, “Luv Games,” but I heard, “Green Eyes,” by Ms. Badu which I eventually knew that the green (jealousy) part would play a big role in the tape fitting better than the original.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I basically got into “the industry,” by just authentically being myself. In 2020, I was still figuring out my sound so many don’t even know I dropped first as a producer until I knew my vision as an artist. However, I always kind of been in the industry because before my solo career I was a ghostwriter for a now defunct label and had been in a group with other artists before

Have you ever had to pivot?
I definitely can! Many may not know that before my own solo career I was a ghostwriter at a label. After seeing how some of the artists I was working with wasn’t taking it serious and had the money/funding behind them but not talented and even worse didn’t have a real work ethic either. I knew after a good bit, it was time for me to focus on myself as an artist instead of devoting all that time to elsewhere. Additionally, I have these times where I take off a cap and put one on because I produce as well too and it’ll be periodic times when I’m focusing more on production than I am my own music.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think many may not understand why I stay consistent as I do because not only do I truly love music and want to be around it any way I possibly can be. Yet, it’s just more beneficial for my fan base to expect at least 2 bodies of work from me a year whether it be EP or LP. I think I’m going to contest Gucci Mane for most projects when it’s said it done cause I really make projects in my sleep like I’m very much a project artist, I grew up watching the CD era and you had to really sell a person your world so they’ll pay to buy it. I like creating worlds…it’s so fun :)
