Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Melissa Rhodes . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Melissa , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
How I Found My Calling – From ICU Burnout to Building an Aesthetic and Wellness Practice
At the time, I was working as a nurse in the ICU, operating in a constant state of high stress. Like many in healthcare, I was burned out—but I didn’t yet know what I wanted to do next. Then a friend mentioned that her plastic surgeon was looking for part-time help running a laser.
Since I was only working three days a week at the hospital, I thought, Why not? It sounded like a way to try something different on my off days.
This wasn’t entirely unfamiliar territory for me. I grew up with a birthmark on my lower lip and chin, and as a teenager, I underwent laser treatments to help with what had always been a big insecurity. I knew firsthand the difference these treatments could make—not just physically, but emotionally.
When I started working with lasers, I was instantly hooked. I loved the science behind it, the visible impact I was having on patients, and the fact that the environment was so different from the urgency and intensity of the ICU. For the first time in a long time, I felt energized by my work.
I worked with that surgeon for a little over a year before deciding to start my own practice, with him continuing as my supervising physician. I haven’t looked back since.
Today, my favorite part of what I do is watching people leave my office more confident than when they arrived. That moment when you can see the change in how someone carries themselves—that’s everything.
Over the years, my practice has evolved beyond aesthetics. Many of my patients have been with me for nearly two decades, and as we’ve all gotten older together, the conversations have shifted toward preventative health and whole-body wellness. I’ve also personally experienced the effects of aging from a hormonal standpoint, which deepened my interest in helping others navigate the same journey.
That’s why I pursued a certification in Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy and now work closely with a nurse practitioner in my office. Together, we’re able to offer our patients a more comprehensive approach—addressing how they look on the outside and how they feel on the inside.
What began as a part-time side job to escape burnout has grown into a lifelong passion. I’m grateful every day that I get to blend science, artistry, and compassionate care in a way that changes lives—starting with my own.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think honesty, consistency and knowledge have helped me build a reputation in the industry. I also always know there’s more to learn and never feel I am a master. I thrive in an environment where there is new information and people passionate about learning.
Let’s talk M&A – we’d love to hear your about your experience with buying businesses.
I had one location and did not have the intention of buying or starting another but a friend and colleague who I shared patients with was tragically killed in a car accident and her husband approached me about buying her practice. I felt compelled to keep her vision alive and ultimately ended up purchasing the office. I think I learned a few things in that transaction. A lot of people selling think what they are selling is worth more due to sentimental or perceived value and the buyer always sees the risks. The negotiation is inevitable but does not need to be negative or contentious. There is usually a way to make it a win for both sides.
