Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Alexa Mosley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alexa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most impactful and meaningful project I have created is my three-painting mini-series, Spiralization. This body of work explores the process of embracing natural hair as a biracial black and white woman. Through three large oil self-portraits—Associations, BiConfidence, and Conditioning—I depict an ongoing journey of self-acceptance and identity.
For me, hair is more than appearance—it is a living archive of history, truth, and personality. It symbolizes my unique identity and what I stand for. In Spiralization, I synthesize specific lived experiences to share the undeniable beauty, power, and love of one’s natural hair. My intention is to encourage other biracial women to embrace and love their hair for what it is, free from social pressures and expectations.
The works employ a stylistic approach of precise, intentional mark-making and vibrant colors to reflect the emotional challenges and triumphs of my journey. The complex layering and blending of colors serve as a metaphor for the integration of two cultures. Confrontational, larger-than-life gazes draw viewers in without hesitation, mirroring my own self-resilience. This direct engagement replicates the way I have personally faced—and continue to face—these experiences. By inserting myself as the model, I visually transcribe the feelings of self-liberation and empowerment.
I also incorporate literal objects tied to the styling and care of my hair, making this series an homage to fellow biracial women navigating identity through their hair. These works hold a special place in my heart because they continue to inspire and empower women from many walks of life—fulfilling my ultimate goal. The objects and imagery I identify with serve as catalysts for conversation, raising awareness about the beauty found in our diversities and complexities.
Creating Spiralization was also a personal artistic challenge. I built parts of the canvases myself and approached oil painting in a way that pushed my boundaries—using elongated brushstrokes and experimenting with new techniques. Working at this larger scale allowed me to express my subject matter in a way that feels both confrontational and powerful. These paintings are deeply meaningful to me, and I hope their impact continues to reach many people.

Alexa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Alexa Mae Mosley, and I’m the proud owner of Made By Alexa Mae LLC. I was raised in New Mexico and moved to Colorado in 2021 to further pursue my career as an artist. In 2023, I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Arts Practices from the University of Colorado Denver, with a focus on Painting, Drawing, and Illustration.
I’ve always been drawn to creating art as a form of personal healing and self-discovery. Growing up in a time and place where I often felt unseen or unaccepted, I turned to self-expression through art to better understand myself and my place in the world. What started as a personal outlet slowly grew into something much bigger—an unexpected path where my ideas, experiences, and talents could be shared with others in ways I never thought possible.
I am confident to say that I am a biracial, multimedia artist who crafts vivid expressions of inspiration and introspection, intertwining color, intricate detail, text, and imagery to awaken wonder. My passion lies in experimenting with various mediums, including acrylics, watercolors, oils, markers, ink, and charcoal, to develop new techniques and push creative boundaries.Through my portraits and landscapes, my work serves as both a reflection and an invitation—encouraging viewers to embrace their complexities, discover beauty in diversity, and embark on a journey of self-exploration. Nature is my endless muse—its beauty, complexity, and ever-changing form reflect the authenticity and truths we often overlook. Through my art, I seek to capture this essence, using creativity as a bridge between reality and introspection. Art is my voice—my passion, my therapy, and a bridge through which I share my creativity with the world.
Currently, I work out of my art studio at Prism Workspaces, where I bring ideas to life through design, custom commissions, and project development—while also managing the day-to-day operations of my business. I create a wide range of affordable, handmade artwork, from watercolor greeting cards and portraits to scenic landscape paintings and magnets. To make my work more accessible, I also reproduce select pieces as art prints in various sizes.
My artwork is featured in galleries, exhibitions, and local businesses, and I regularly participate in community art pop-ups, festivals, and markets. Through my creative work, I aim to share inspiration, encouragement, and empowerment. I deeply believe in the transformative power of art, and I hope my perspective can uplift and connect with others.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Supporting artists is essential—not only for their individual growth but also for the strength of the creative economy as a whole. When we engage with artists and uplift them throughout their journey, we help their businesses flourish and contribute to a thriving, diverse world of creativity.
There are countless ways to support emerging artists. Follow their social media accounts, subscribe to newsletters, join creative communities, and become a patron. Attend markets, pop-ups, festivals, exhibitions, artist talks, open studios, and live art events. Simply being present in spaces where you can connect with artists—asking questions, engaging in conversations, and allowing time for reflection can have a powerful impact. If you can’t attend in person, explore online exhibitions, live streams, and recorded events. And of course, purchasing artwork in any form is one of the most direct and meaningful ways to show appreciation for an artist’s creations.
Support can also come in other valuable forms: donating art materials, volunteering at events and exhibitions, or spreading the word about upcoming shows to friends and family. Some galleries and markets can even offer reduced entry fees or lower commissions for artists, which can make a tremendous difference—helping them participate without facing financial strain or discouragement.
Every action matters and creates impact. By being engaged and involved in the creative community, we help sustain the artists who inspire us. When we work together, we keep the arts alive and thriving in the economy.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being in my studio and creating artwork that can inspire, comfort, and even change lives is one of the most rewarding parts of my journey as an artist. Whether it’s crafting a deeply personal portrait of a loved one who has passed or painting a vibrant landscape that stirs joyful memories, I cherish the opportunity to make a meaningful impact. I’ve created pieces that people have truly connected with. Finding an audience I can resonate and grow with has been deeply fulfilling—it pushes me to keep creating.
Although I explore a wide range of styles, much of my work centers on themes of self-identity and acceptance, with a particular focus on my experience of being biracial.. I often hear from people in the community who share how my art has inspired them or helped them navigate difficult transitions in their own lives. Inspiring others to discover their resilience and embrace self-exploration, guiding them toward becoming the best version of themselves.
One of the most fulfilling parts of my practice is encouraging kids to push their creative boundaries and embrace their imaginations. I believe my artistic voice has the power to influence and inspire the next generation, and serving as a role model and mentor fills my heart with purpose. I love being a creative—pushing boundaries, exploring diverse art forms, and continually finding new ways to express myself while navigating my own unique path.
