We were lucky to catch up with William Washington recently and have shared our conversation below.
William, appreciate you joining us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
Although i’ve written poetry for over 50 years, when I started performing poetry professionally, (for pay) I was labeled by my peers as a Spoken Word Artist. I was given that title because of the passionate way I delivered my thoughts… Thoughts that stemmed from a devastating divorce, and a long lasting brokenheart. My journey has given me the courage to write and publish my pain in the hopes of healing someone suffering from similar brokenness. To this very day I yearn to be thought of and remembered as… A Poet.

William, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m an African American Male. I’m left handed and Aquarian therefore I was born with the power of forethought and the humbleness of a Saint! My weapons are pen and paper magnified by a church pastor’s voice and delivery. For those who just write I say write with all of your senses and all of your might! To those who are interested I’m an Elder Poet in declining health, yet I want my work to be remembered for its raw truth and poetic intent. Ase’

How did you build your audience on social media?
In year 2008 during the midst of my prolonged struggle with depression a concerned friend suggested that I try Social Media- Facebook to let friends and family know that I’m okay and Still alive! Soon After people started connecting with me wanting to hear my story of survival and redemption. I went from a lonely nobody to a widely sought after poet/speaker! I knew then that Social Media was my salvation.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to learn to not be so negatively reactive to criticism of my work/writings. I had to realize that everyone will not like or care for my creative process. I had to learn that I am not the tell all… I’m just a vessel. This in turn not only made me a better poet it made me a better father and better man to all the girls I’ve loved… Before.
