We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chris Ruo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Chris, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
Best investment: one day of my time on a cold Instagram DM.
Two years ago a new producer, Jonathan (aka Foínix), DM’d me a decent—but not mind-blowing—demo. What sold me was how genuine he was. I took a small bet: I produced an idea that night and sent it back the next day. His fast, thoughtful reply told me everything about his work ethic, so I kept going—even though I had ~30k monthly listeners and he had ~8k.
He took off. Today he’s at 1.5M+ monthly listeners, and I’m now at ~600k+ myself—largely thanks to the tracks we made and the doors he opened with new collaborators. He’s still the first to help when I need an intro or advice. That one day of work keeps compounding.
What I learned
Bet on people and pace, not just metrics.
Speed builds trust—fast turnarounds signal seriousness.
Small, low-risk bets on genuine collaborators can deliver asymmetric upside.
In music, relationships are the highest-return asset.

Chris, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Chris Ruo, a Chinese-born, Los Angeles–based music producer and artist whose work blends chill guitars, rhythmic electronic beats, and emotive melodies into a sound that resonates across borders. In just a few years, I’ve gone from producing in my bedroom to becoming one of the most streamed Chinese electronic artists, with over 30 million streams and more than 500,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.
I first stepped into music production out of curiosity and a deep love for storytelling through sound. What began as late nights experimenting in a DAW quickly became a professional career after my tracks started gaining traction online. My style has since been featured on major Editorial Playlists like New Music Friday, Electro Mix, and Tropical House, which helped my music reach a global audience.
I provide original productions, collaborations, and ghost productions for artists, labels, and brands looking for polished, market-ready tracks. My work spans from crafting signature singles for my own artist project to producing behind-the-scenes for others, including credits with global DJ/producer KSHMR, Norwegian hitmaker Tungevaag, Grammy-nominated producer Edward Maya, and Nash Overstreet of Hot Chelle Rae. I’ve also released music through leading labels such as Warner Music, One Seven Music, Heartfeldt, Paraíso, Loudkult, and Chillyourmind.
What sets me apart is my ability to merge global influences—drawing from my Chinese heritage, Western pop sensibilities, and modern EDM production techniques—to create tracks that feel fresh yet universally relatable. Whether I’m working on a summer-ready tropical house anthem or a moody, cinematic piece, I aim to make music that connects emotionally while holding up to industry-level standards.
I’m most proud of the fact that my music has built a genuine, engaged listener base worldwide—without losing the authenticity that got me here. For me, it’s not just about streams or numbers; it’s about creating something timeless that people will come back to years from now.
For anyone discovering me for the first time: my work is for listeners who crave music that’s both emotionally evocative and sonically refined. Whether you’re a fan, a fellow artist, or a label, my goal is the same—to create music that moves you, stays with you, and brings your vision to life.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
A few years ago, I was releasing music under the name Chr1s, but despite my best efforts, things weren’t taking off the way I hoped. I felt stuck—creatively and professionally—and knew I needed a fresh start. In 2023, I made the difficult decision to pivot completely: I launched a new artist identity, Chris Ruo, with a clear vision, refined sound, and updated branding.
That change was transformative. Within months, my tracks were landing on major Editorial Playlists, I was signing with top labels, and my monthly listeners skyrocketed to over 500,000. It wasn’t just a rebrand—it was a mental reset that allowed me to focus on making music that felt authentic to me, while also connecting with a much larger audience. Looking back, that pivot was the single most important move I’ve made in my career.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
One thing non-creatives often struggle to understand is that success in the creative world isn’t always a straight line—it’s more like a rollercoaster with no map. From the outside, people see the finished songs, the big collaborations, or the streaming numbers and think it all happened quickly. In reality, there are years of trial and error, countless unreleased tracks, late nights of self-doubt, and moments when you question if it’s all worth it.
What keeps me going is the belief that each song is a step forward, even if no one hears it right away. In music, the work you put in today might not show results for months—or even years—but it all compounds. Creativity is as much about resilience as it is about talent, and understanding that can make the journey a lot less intimidating for anyone who wants to start.
