We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Keera Brabham a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Keera , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I couldn’t be more blessed or grateful to be a business owner. Working when I want to allows me to be more involved in raising my son, and it gives me the time to schedule vacations and self-care. Sometimes I do sit back and think about what it would be like to have a regular job. I feel as though I would be miserable. I wouldn’t have the time or space to be creative. All business owners have had to experience a slow period. Business isn’t always booming. It’s easy to get down in the dumps when it’s not. I once had a slow period when I moved from Indian River county to Broward county. Even though I was well prepared I still felt horrible. Imagining being on somebody else’s clock came to me once but that was about it. The freedom of working whenever I want to is the main reason of becoming a business owner.
Keera , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Keera Brabham and I am a licensed esthetician in Plantation, Florida. I offer skin and personal care services such as facials, eyelash extensions, waxing, and makeup. What sets me apart from others is that I am a one-stop shop. For example, in just one appointment you can receive a chemical peel, a Brazilian, and eyelash extensions. My clients love the fact that they can come in and get whatever they need to be done without having to go to multiple locations to do so. I am most proud of expanding my business and moving my business to a new city. I have been living here in Broward for 2 years now. I have worked with various celebrities and highly influential people within the community. I believe this move was the best thing to happen to me. I’m able to push my brand more and network. The main thing I want potential clients to know is that I believe everyone should have the right to feel beautiful in their skin whether no matter their gender or race.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my audience on social media by doing two things: using trending hash tags and creating a monthly budget for promotion on sites like Instagram and Facebook. Always define your target market and area. By doing this you are establishing your brand within a community of people.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
I opened up a credit card at Ulta to start the initial capital needed to start my business. It made sense to me being that it is a beauty supply store. I was so happy with a $2,000 limit. I still had to dig into my pockets for the things that couldn’t be purchased at Ulta. That was another $3,000.
