We recently connected with St. Courts and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, St. thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project to me was a collaboration of my late mentee’s Ian ‘Cali’ Adams idea which was name ‘The North Memphis Classic’. Basketball Game/Vending Event that took place at Manassas High School gym where Ian and majority of the Smokey City, New Chicago, and Klondike’s youth attended. The ‘North Memphis Classic’ to bring together all the community from all areas and generations to support local businesses and talent and fellowship together by products, services and entertainment.
The reason why it was so meaningful was because at certain moments almost made me want to cancel the event such as us losing 25% of the basketball player’s roster the whole event, but Ian stepped in and said to me, “Don’t worry about it we gone make it happen” and he found more players to ensure the game was still on. So Ian taking on responsibility let me know that he realized he wasn’t just a player, he was the power to keep the event going. Also Ian’s interview plus speech at the end of the game about seeing his vision coming true, and saying most kids in the community can do amazing things, they just need an opportunity.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
In this journey of artistry, especially in the age of social media, you have to be able to understand the difference between supporters and spectators, then you’ll innerstand the difference between love and attention. Fans who love what you do, will support you even at your hardest times, that’s considered love. Fans who spectate will only be entertained by you, including your moments of adversity, that’s just attention, please know the difference.
“If you live by the cheers, you’ll die by the boos.”-T.I.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social Media is a reflector of your actions and behavior, focus on real life meaningful history making moves that will riplle through social media, think about the greatest artist, rarely or ever be on social media (Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar) and even if your following is small its still strong and will grow stronger, be cause you rather have 10 followers that supports you 100% than 100 followers that support you only 10%
