As an outsider, breaking into an industry can often seem like an impossible challenge and so we reached out to some very generous folks who agreed to share their stories of how they broke into their respective industries.

From the time I was little I always knew I wanted my life to be about more than just myself. I had a great care for those around me. This care for others really defined me at a young age and has stayed with me to this day.
I was in middle school. I was a very competitive and elite athlete. And I had the opportunity to set a record for my grade level in a 12 lap run for gym class. That day everyone was excited for me. But mostly I just wanted to prove that I could be the best. My first job in the beauty field was as a makeup artist at a Macys beauty counter and also a part-time receptionist, a luxury hotel spa. Honestly, I almost didn’t go to the Spa interview because I wasn’t sure I’d fit in, but I ended up connecting really well with the spa manager. She gave me my first opportunity in the aesthetics industry, and working in that environment inspired me to pursue this career of mine as an Esthetician. I’ll never forget the day the hospital I had faithfully served as a nurse leader over a surgical center announced a “RIF” — a reduction in force. I was one of 150 employees let go. It was painful, disorienting, and at the time, it felt like the ground had been pulled out from under me.
