Today we’d like to introduce you to Amir H.Toosi.
Hi Amir, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hard work, consistency, patience, and taking risks have brought me to where I stand today. I was born in the capital, Tehran, but due to my father’s business, I grew up on a small island in the Persian Gulf—Kish Island, Iran. Growing up in the 1990s, in the aftermath of the Iran-Iraq War, meant living with limited infrastructure. This experience taught me, and many others of my generation, the value of hard work in achieving even the simplest things in life.
At the same time, the lack of advanced technology allowed me to form a deep connection with nature. Spending countless hours near the Persian Gulf, witnessing its vastness and unpredictability, shaped my understanding of the world. It taught me that nature is both powerful and peaceful, while human existence, despite all its inventions, remains fragile.
These experiences gave me a unique perspective—one that allows me to see life through both micro and macro lenses. Whenever I feel overwhelmed or lost, looking at the sky and the sea brings me calmness. Their vastness reminds me of the bigger picture, a habit that has stayed with me throughout my life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I speak about consistency, I mean pushing forward even in the face of struggle—adjusting your perspective, shifting your approach, and finding new ways to reach your goals. I’ve faced many challenges along my journey, but if I were to divide my life into two chapters—before and after moving to the United States—the most defining challenge came just before this transition. The hardest decision I ever made was leaving behind everything I had built in my business to move to the U.S. in support of my wife’s pursuit of a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. I left behind years of achievements, stepping into uncertainty with no guarantees, solely to support her dreams.
Despite the risk and the unknowns, I am proud of her for making this bold decision and for chasing something meaningful in her life and career. Also, I am proud of myself too, for embracing the struggle, no matter how uncertain, would be worth it. Family and team work is the key!!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My art is inspired by optical tools like microscopes, telescopes and etc., which represent the idea of unseen worlds. Using apertures metaphorically in my sculptures, I invite curiosity and discovery. By blending Persian cultural patterns and personal narratives with universal themes, I aim to bridge reality and imagination, encouraging reflection on our place in existence.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My mother was a second-grade teacher, and when I reached second grade, she became my teacher. She was very strict with me, worried that I might take advantage of the situation—which, to be honest, I sometimes did. But it’s still one of my favorite childhood memories. Another special memory is following my father after work, fishing by the sea, and listening to his stories as we waited to catch fish. Those moments by the water, just sitting together, are something I’ll always cherish.
