We recently connected with Edwin Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Edwin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I have is my current comic series called Zero Hour Epsilon Force. It’s a superhero, action, science fiction, and fantasy series about a reptile warrior who wants to become a superhero through his planetary protection force. However he fails to make the team due to the vast amount of powerful supers that already exist in his world. The series takes place in a Christian-based universe and incorporates real world situations that teens and young adults can relate to while still having the entertainment and feel of a 90s Saturday Morning Cartoon. Being black, the first topic that the comic addressed was black history and racism. Following this, the comic gradually branches out to talk about other things such as mental health, family issues, and cancer to name a few. The reason why this project is meaningful to me is because ever since I was a kid I was inspired by all the superhero shows I watched as a kid and wanted to have my own characters as well. So this project allows me to pursue that while addressing things that people go through to make it relatable and allows me to tell people about Jesus as well. The main series is for teens and young adults due to the story having darker themes and sometimes a bit more violent fights but there is also an edited version of the series that younger readers and children can read as well that doesn’t have a lot of the heavier material.

Edwin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a child, drawing, writing and being active were some of my favorite things to do. I also loved watching Saturday Morning cartoons and action movies as well as reading/listening to Bible stories like Samson and David and Goliath. Finally I loved learning about reptiles and dinosaurs too. All of this combined motivated me to create my own superhero named Tyrannogator who I drew a lot throughout my childhood. I always imagined Tyrannogator in various situations similar to the heroes on TV and how he would fight his way out of them using his superpowers or use his athleticism to train for something that he would know was coming. As an adult, I finally decided to create and publish my own comic series staring Tyrannogator. Tense moments were going on in society around the time I was creating the first issue and this was partly what made me decide to include more relatable content in the series that people may encounter in real life and to speak on those topics to help people overcome them. I also wanted the series to be Bible-based in order to tell people about Jesus while still keeping the comics intense, entertaining, action-packed, and relatable so people would actually want to read it and come back for more. This way it could be similar to many of the superheroes, anime and action movies I loved as a kid and relatable while still making Jesus a central point of the series. This is all why the main series is more for teens and young adults unlike many other Christian-based content that’s around and this is what makes it different and why I’m proud of it.

Have you ever had to pivot?
When writing my comic story, one of my goals is to be able to have as big of an audience as I can at least within the Christian circle. I like building people up with my comics, however since some topics I address can sometimes be controversial (like racism for example) I like to write in a way that addresses the problem but doesn’t paint people in a bad light. Writing this way also helps me to be able to easily pivot to or build into other topics in my story arcs (such as mental health or cancer for example) while still having the story flow really well and allowing me to address a wide variety of topics from a Christian perspective.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to do something that I’m genuinely passionate about is probably the most rewarding aspect of being an artist so far. Since there’s not much I genuinely get excited for, drawing and writing provides that excitement for me and allows me to express my creativity in my own way and however I see fit while also motivating and helping others.
