We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alyssa Ellis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alyssa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Well… my 1st dream was to be a princess, A Disney princess to be exact. Growing up and watching Disney movies. Was the most magical part of my childhood. Listening and seeing the amazing people attached to the voice of the princesses I loved, I wanted to do that as well. So, I would have a competition with myself. To see if I can hit higher notes than them. And from that day forward I fell in love with music.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I guess you can say my performing career started in school. In 4th grade I was in my schools choir, I moved around a lot in elementary. So it was hard to maintain a stable environment for the things I was interested in. I didn’t want to become too attached to things that would eventually be taken away.
High school and college held fun opportunities for me. I started a rock band my freshman year in college called Drift 81 we lasted for 5 years actively performing for 1yr. We had personal differences and I left them, and started my solo career as AlyssaChristine.
My biggest obstacle was losing my band. As difficult as it was. I have a great support system that believes in me and my talents. I threw a release party this past April for the debut of AlyssaChristine. I couldn’t have asked for a better show. I would say that was my proudest moment as an entertainer so far.
What sets me apart from other artists. I would say my sound is different. Even though I would classify myself as alternative rock. I feel like my music sounds different than what’s out there now. On the senses of I don’t know who I can compare, and say my music sounds like.
What I would like my fans to know is, that I’m working on putting a new show together, i have some new projects I’m working on. I’m trying to get better at posting on social media but if i have any news it’ll be on my Instagram
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In my younger years I’ve had family members/past relationships/ friendships tell me I couldn’t sing, dance etc. And I think that’s only made me go harder, and prove everyone wrong. Because I like being right.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I would say I wish I learned an instrument when I was younger, growing up I didn’t have a lot of money to learn everything I wanted to. However I was pretty stubborn when it came to it. I either wanted to learn the harp or the piano, and in public school they don’t have a harp, and for some reason they only allowed teachers to play the piano at the time.
