We recently connected with Clio Lang and have shared our conversation below.
Clio, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I knew I wanted to be an artist is when I won my first poetry competition in tenth grade. Upon winning first place, I was awarded a workshop to meet authors at a book festival. It was definitely a highlight for me . Especially as a literature nerd, this experience helped shaped me as a writer. This is when I learned that writing isn’t just about words; it’s an art nonetheless like painting or drawing.
Clio, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been a writer since a teen and have branched into freelance editing and digital creating. At 23, I joined Houston Writers Guild as their Critique Group Director. This enabled me to oversee critique groups in our area.
I also became a model for causes to fundraise for fatal neurological conditions. As a brain surgery survivor, creativity and advocacy shaped my brand.
What I’m most proud of is influencing patients with brain conditions to be creative and let their voices be heard.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to become a seasoned public figure in the key note speaker circles. I want to be my artistic self but build a platform about my condition hydrocephalus, an incurable brain condition where CSF doesn’t drain by itself. Patients with this condition have to have a brain shunt to drain it 24/7. It makes no sense for us to live like this yet it’s widely unknown/ misunderstood. As a writer, I create digital portraits, poetry or share others stories to spread awareness
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The society should spend more time supporting other artists in their area that actually contribute to their community. The society is so obsessed with celebrities.
