Today we’d like to introduce you to Paulette Stout.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Like many people, I started as a reader and had the audacity to think my voice was needed in the marketplace. I began writing the genre I most read a the time, murder mystery. But I quickly pivoted to writing stories with a strong social pulse that offer the powerful substance of women’s fiction and the deep personal connections and spice of romance. Readers say my books make them think and feel, and I work hard at my craft to be sure that I always exceed expectations.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing is smooth, ever. As writers, we learn by doing, fumbling through and getting incrementally better over time at both the craft and business of books. Most of my setbacks relate to misaligning what I want to write with what readers want to read. This includes using the right format, structure and packaging–such as book covers, etc. Get any of those wrong and the stories almost don’t matter because few people will read them. It’s well and good to write stories for ourselves. But if we want to please readers, it’s important to understand their needs so we can craft books that deliver.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m known for writing books with the perfect blend of steam, emotional depth, and powerful messages. I love writing contemporary fiction, mostly set in New York City, though my most recent novel also as a rural setting. I’m proud that I write books about important social issues that challenge prevailing thinking and give readers a delicious story to devour. Usually in a couple days, they’re that addictive. :) Readers in 43 countries have enjoyed my books, and I’m honored to have tallied 17 book awards across my titles. They’re standalone novels in the same universe: Book 1: Love, Only Better centers on women’s intimacy and the importance of loving ourselves in all facets of our lives. Book 2: What We Never Say, features a #MeToo story with a twist–a male survivor and a female aggressor set in fashion publishing. It includes my favorite ending, by far! In Book 3, What Eyes Can’t See, I explore the complex issues of race and class with an spicy interracial romance and a powerful message of belonging. Book 4, What We Give Away, will forever transform what readers think about food, weight, and themselves, featuring a second-chance romance and lots of yummy food. My readers walk in the shoes of these diverse and dynamic characters, emerging satisfied, enlightened, and ready to soar.
What matters most to you?
As authors, we ask readers to give up their two most precious assets: time and money. I’m proud that my books make readers feel like their investment was well spent. They not only deeply connect with my stories, but become stronger and more self-assured for having read them.
