We recently connected with Fung Cheung and have shared our conversation below.
Fung, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
I don’t think I’ve ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized. Maybe from myself.
It took me a long time to accept the ‘artist’ label and to feel okay to tell other’s that I’m an artist. I always feel like I’m a hack. I’m not an artist, imposter syndrome. There’s this preconceived notion of what is an artist until I had this epiphany one day – the artist label comes with freedom. It frees me to do whatever I want. And that’s when I chose to embrace the ‘artist’ label.

Fung, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Fung Cheung based in New York City. I started my spiritual art journey after visiting the Teotihuacan pyramids in Mexico. After my trip, I quit my full time job and began my life as an artist creating across different mediums from murals, to animation, installation, and experience.
Our contemporary lifestyle has neglected spirituality into the absolutes of aspirations, comfort zones and status. People continue to suffer from their inner turmoil caused by modern turbulence intensifies – seesawing between desires and fears. Unable to be at peace, content, or present. Their spirit remains malnourished and fragile because they are disconnected from it. My work serves as a humble beacon to reignite people’s personal belief systems. Belief in spirit and its power to transcend cultural conditions and move through the turbulence of life peacefully, optimistically, and fearlessly.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
To wake up every day and knowing that I get to create. I live to make art.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Quitting my corporate career with barely any saving to pursuit art. It’s a leap of faith. I’m still running on faith to this day. Faith in that I will be okay and taken care of and everything will work out.
