We recently connected with Matt Jenkins and have shared our conversation below.
Matt, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
The area i live in has a natural saltwater spring, called “The Great Saltwell”. Prehistorically there was an inland ocean here between the northeast coast and the gulf that eventually filled in with silt, trapping salt deposits underground. Archeology has shown usage of it for a very long time for migrating wildlife as a source of salt, natural minerals, and water. And for people back to the 1300’s “but suspected usage much earlier” up into the late 18-early 1900’s for mining salt from the water. Adding into that is the importance that salt has paid throughout history, at times being as valuable as gold and used as a form of currency. Often given as a gift to admired guests, as salt was highly regarded as a prized possession. So, to pay homage to where I live and considering something that has been considered throughout history has been so highly regarded ” as I hope someone, someday, might consider something I built for them in the same aspect”. I felt the name Saltwell was very fitting.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Ever since I was young, I can remember going to antique stores and looking at the antique furniture. Studying with amazement of the attention to detail that a lot of pieces had. Be it a very elaborate/decorative piece. or something simpler but, almost every piece had a decorative veneer panel or something that would catch my eye as a decorative aspect that just wasn’t on modern or newer furniture. My favorite parts of the furniture were highly figured book matched veneer panels, for some reason it always mesmerized me. And is still my favorite part of building furniture and cabinetry today. I built a walnut clock in high school which I would consider the first furniture piece I built. Thats where the want to build started.
I now build just about anything. Doors, cabinets, furniture, custom moldings, etc. I work closely with each customer to create something that is truly one of a kind, for the intended purpose of each project. Down to the last detail. Quality and design are both important. And respect is given equally to each aspect for a finished product that hits every intended mark.
As a brand looking into the future, I’m hoping for positive growth, and to further solidify the brand name with what I mentioned earlier. But more importantly inspire others to step out of their comfort zone and take a step/or leap in the direction they’ve been holding themselves back from. As cliche as it may sound. If I can do it, so can you.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth is where almost all of my business comes from. For an owner operator small business, without a lot of capital for marketing. Every project needs to be a success. If you always strive to do your best and exceed the client’s expectations, even just a little, it doesn’t go unnoticed. And they will happily refer you to others.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Attention to detail and doing things in a way that I didn’t see a lot of others in my area doing. When I first started the business there were things I wanted to add to a project but, the client may not be able to see it as you did. Or were concerned of the extra cost it would add. In those situations, I reassured them if they were not happy with the changes I would bring it back to the original design. Or offer to cover the extra cost if I felt it would really elevate the project. It was an investment on my part but, luckily out of those instances I didn’t have a negative reaction. Helping build my portfolio with aspects I wanted to showcase.
