Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mary Soul. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Mary thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The first time I performed on stage with an acoustic guitar was when I knew! I was 12 when I was inspired to learn acoustic, I love the calming atmosphere that acoustic instruments create and I wanted to be able to create it as well. It was quite the journey of learning but I remember shaking when I was finally confident enough to step on stage and perform solo with my newly learned beginner chords! As nervous as I was the stage still gave me comfort and it allowed me to invite the crowd into a musical connection. I stepped down with a racing heart but I immediately knew I was going to be returning sooner than later!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Jennifer Marisol, also known by my artist name, Mary Soul. I’m a contemporary artist located in DFW, TX. For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with music and the way it creates unique feelings and emotions within us all. I started my musical journey when I was 10 years old after I was invited by a classmate to join my elementary orchestra, I was a bit hesitant, but I’m glad I decided to attend because I learned my first instrument, the viola. My musical mind was broadened even more after I joined the worship team at my church to play viola, sing lead vocals, and sing alto harmonies, this helped me find my contemporary music style. In the summer of 2013 we attended a large outdoor Christian concert called ‘Celebrate Freedom’ and after seeing some of the performers I got a heavy inspiration to learn how to play the acoustic guitar! At the time, my parents didn’t have the money to start me on guitar lessons so self-teaching was my leap of faith at 12! I believe I quit trying to learn how to play guitar at least 3 times because it was too frustrating! Thankfully, I just couldn’t stay away and one day I never set my guitar back down. I was 15 when I started to create melodies that helped me express my feelings and emotions, these melodies turned into chords and lyrics throughout time and before I knew it I was writing songs. I never thought about performing in other stages outside school concerts or church services, until winter of 2017, when my soulmate invited me to Opening Bell Coffee in Dallas! Until then, I had never seen a coffee shop with a performing stage, it felt like a dream! There was also a nostalgic atmosphere for me, even tho I’ve never been there before, I think I knew it was the place where the memories of my journey as a performer would begin, but that happened a few years later. I still kept performing in church events and had college recitals until the pandemic of 2020. My weekly music schedule then became empty due to lockdown and I knew I was going to go crazy if there was no music being created. That’s what motivated me to create my small singing page on TikTok! It took a while but in 2022 I returned to Opening Bell Coffee to finally perform my own songs for the first time! With the support and inspiration that my surrounding loved ones give me, my proud music milestone as of 2025 is being able to say that my first written song, The Truth, is also my first released single! I am still writing and composing more songs so that I may continue to perform and create more musical memories!

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
There is a particular goal, as a matter of fact, it’s to be heard by my mom!! She has been my supporter and my number one fan since the start of my music journey, and even before then! My best memories consist of her because she was there every single step of the way, until October 2021. It’s the year my soul went silent after she unexpectedly entered heaven’s gate. A few months before she blessed me with a beautiful Taylor acoustic guitar, which I named Kaleidoscope, and it became my performing guitar ever since. She didn’t get to see me grow more as a musician, or as a person here on earth, so I write and sing melodies whole hearted believing she listens and sings with me too!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being an artist has so many beautiful rewards, but for me, the most rewarding aspect is creating memories! Whether it’s performing on a new stage, connecting with different musicians, or just another practice day in my room, there’s always a new experience waiting to happen. My mom used to say that the memories we create are ultimately all we get to keep, which is why I am eager to expand my musical memories and continue growing as an artist!
