We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jen Breslin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
I was working for a great Med Spa in Austin as their lead esthetician/educator/laser specialist until we went into lockdown in 2020, and unfortunately I lost my job amongst many others. I had been having thoughts of doubt for quite a bit of time, one being the amount of money my clients were paying to target the same issues after years of treatments. I asked myself, “Why aren’t they seeing permanent change? Why are they coming back for the same issues years later?” Something wasn’t right, and morally it didn’t sit well with me. When lockdown hit I chose to revisit my doubts in my career and dive into the Holistic world of esthetics. I grew up in a very holistic household and even started my career at Aveda, so why not go back to my roots? I came across the brand Osmosis, and thats where everything took off. I was able to understand the root cause of my skin issues (eczema, melasma, dry/irriated skin) and actually get rid of it permanently. I started offering facials as a hobby to my neighbors and before too long I was needing to open up my first office. The amount of real change and relief my clients were experiencing was the driving force for my business. I haven’t looked back and absolutely love changing my clients lives. The only thing I wish I had done differently would be starting sooner and listening to my gut when I knew something wasn’t right for me. Get the office, get the permits, just start… everything else will fall into place.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I grew up in Austin, Tx and had a very holistic background. My mom would make her own skincare products and force green powders down our throats (haha). I went from Medical to Holistic Esthetics due to not agreeing with the lack of permanent change from invasive treatments. I now offer holistic facials along with internal work with supplementation. I learned that the root causes of our skin and health issues could be targeted and, in most cases, healed with proper supplementation. With that knowledge, I target my clients liver, kidneys, digestive track, adrenals, mental health, and a lot of auto immune diseases to help resolve Acne, pigmentation/melasma, rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema. I am beyond proud that I can offer holistic protocols for my clients when they feel like they have no more options left. Most people come to me as a “last resort” and the reason I do what I do is for those people to not feel like they have to lean on Antibiotics and Steroids.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my business is 100% word of mouth. The best clients I get are the ones my previous clients have referred to me. I enjoy this method so much that I offer free treatments to the clients who refer their friends and family!

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I recently traveled to Europe to start practicing a different kind of holistic treatment. I call it my Sculpting Treatment and it involves Deep tissue massage, buccal (intra oral), lymphatic massage, and plumping techniques. These bring circulation (nutrients) to the skin, allow for toxin flow, and muscle release all with manual manipulation. One thing I learned is to always stay in your scope, don’t fall into the habit of offering more with the potential of losing your sight on why you started your business.
