We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dylan Query a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dylan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
After officially starting Query Productions in 2019, I spent years paying my bills with day jobs and weekend video gigs. I always told myself that my business would only ever be a side job and I was comfortable with that. And yet… As the years passed, I felt less and less fulfilled in my day jobs. Having not quite figured out my true dream, I took a big jump to leave my stable corporate job to go work for a non profit in Indianapolis. This was the first domino in a long series of dominos to fall. After what can only be described as the most catastrophic event of my career, I lasted a whole 6 months before I was fired. This consequently led me to move out of Indianapolis and back to my hometown, where I vowed never to move back to. From there I started and quit 2 more jobs before God’s plan for me finally clicked.
The question I finally asked myself was this… “Why am I using my skills, resources, equipment, and my network to build video production departments for other companies?” After that, the veil was lifted so to speak. I knew what I had to do and I was in the perfect position to do it. After years of building my arsenal of gear, savings account and network, I officially took Query Productions full time in January of 2024. I’m proud to say that in just my first year, my business earned more money than any salary ever me in a year and 2025 is already shaping up to be even bigger.
My dream now is to become the premiere video production business in Southern Indiana.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Dylan Query and I’m the owner-operator of Query Productions. I started working on shorts films when I was in High School. I studied at Ball State University, meshing 3 different minors into a hybrid degree of sorts including Entrepreneurship, Digital Media Storytelling, and Telecommunications.
Through Query Productions, I offer a wide range of video production services including commercials, social media content creation, weddings, event capture, music videos, podcast production and even some film making. A couple of years ago, my film partner Jacob Stieneker and I, produced a Western titled Cold Cross right here in Indiana. We scored International distribution, including a Walmart physical media distribution plan and hosted several sold out premieres in Indianapolis. To say we were so incredibly blessed (and surprised) by that development would be an understatement. Since then, we have produced more shorts and hope to continue bringing more feature film production opportunities to Southern Indiana.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Film Production is a challenging industry, especially in Indiana where you’re not just perpetually the underdog but you’re also fighting against preconceived Hoosier opinions. Not many people can say that they’ve made a successful film but I attribute our success to our widely supportive community. Our trick? Get as many people involved as possible. I’ve found that if you’re able to create an energetic and positive production experience, anyone involved is going to be more willing to become champions for the project. And with so many Hoosier’s not quite seeing the full potential of a growing Indiana film production industry… converted champions is EXACTLY what we need to turn the tide. It’s a chance to come together and enjoy making something creative together. Year over year, this strategy has seen my social media presence to grow 100% year over year.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
One particular strategy I’ve been using to meet new clients is getting involved with the local chamber of commerce in surrounding counties. This has been a fruitful strategy, especially considering that in my immediate area, there aren’t that many video production companies so it’s relatively easier for me to stand out, an more importantly, serve the needs of my community. So many small businesses are struggling with running their business and meeting their content marketing needs for social media.
As a society, the concept of “If you build it, they will come” is nearly extinct. We’re no longer looking for new businesses. We wait for the businesses to come to us. What does that mean? If you don’t have a marketing strategy, then you’re missing out on a growing number of clientele. Small businesses NEED more content creators and marketers.
