We were lucky to catch up with Daniel Paterno recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Daniel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Innovation comes in all shapes, sizes and across all industries, so we’d love to hear about something you’ve done that you feel was particularly innovative.
this may not be that innovative, but I do think it’s unique to the storie-s of my careers. I started as a graphic designer, but then trained as a hair stylist. i’ve been doing both businesses successfully since the start of my working life

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I really operate both my salon business and my graphic design business as seperate entities and on different days. If there seems to be some overlap, or a client might benefit from my other business, then I’ll share that info. Generally, though, over the years, I’ve found that “clients” really can’t grasp the dual business concept. They see me as an expert in the field they’re familiar with, and I’m grateful for that.
I’ve done both business for as long as I have because they both feed me creatively in different ways; one more sculpturally in 3d, and the other in 2 dimensions.
overall.. I trained as a graphic designer in the late 80s with traditional methods of production etc. Then trained as a hairdresser but at the same time was introduced to the computer in the early 90s which re-invigorated my interest and excitement about graphic design and computer aided design.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I’m a creative person who just has the drive to create. I’m excited about resources and possibilities which have fueld both businesses. The computer affords me unlimited resources for creation, and recently I moved cities which introduced me to an entirely new salon clientele with new needs which has forced myself to learn new techinques to expand my creative tool kit

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think every business can be creative.. in different ways. Marketing any business is one area where creativity is an asset. Strategize how to get your buisiness in front of potential clients, in addition to expected social media channels. Creating business alliances is another way.
