Check Out Pamela K Walters’s Story
Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela K Walters.
Hi Pamela K , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my brand PK BIJOUX because I wanted something fabulous and unique in the way of accessories. I was disappointed in the offerings from high end brands and that pushed me to see if I could do better. I had a very robust collection of rare vintage jewelry and in my frustration, I began dismantling pieces of my collections and re-built them into one-of-a-kind creations. What I do is called Assemblage which is French for Assemble. Basically, it means that I collect wonderful pieces from all over the world and from that massive collection I build new and unique jewelry and accessories. I have been fortunate to be shown on a regular basis in Vogue, Bazaar, L’Official and more. I also won an award in 2017 for Best Jewelry in an International film. Quite an honor. It was a great evening! Each piece has history and a story behind it.
For instance;
I use crosses in my work as a nod to Coco Chanel, Yves St Laurent and Christian La Croix who regularly built jewelry around the cross motif. I am part Cherokee, my mother was literally born on a reservation, so organized religion does not come into play but spirituality in the form of caring for the earth and those around us, does. The crosses are very popular as a high fashion look and are used regularly in the magazines and on high profile clients.
The angels are a nod to Dolce and Gabbana who regularly use them in their designs and shows. The Angels I use are collectors items. Purchased in Italy and France most of them are signed by the artists and dated from 1954. They were commissioned at that time to be replicas of the angels on the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Most of them are worth triple what I ask for them but it’s a passion for me. As you saw, the little Chinese men are from a collection that I bought in Paris and go back to the early to mid 1900s. I once built a magnificent piece on a Beavers skull found in Santa Fe / very GaGa. ;)…. And my favorite piece was built on carburetor parts I retrieved in Biarritz. The list goes on and on.
The pearls on most pieces are real Baroque pearls that I use with collected vintage Miriam Haskell fittings. I make each drop by hand.
The War pins are from my collection of War medals. Some of the medals are quite rare and it is reflected in the cost. I mix them with wonderful vintage pins and jewel bits. They have been the favorite choice for men’s lapels or tie replacement and of course women love them as well. I have a surprising amount of noteworthy clients including Dame Harriet Walters from Succession.
I have sold my work in boutiques in Beverly Hills, Newport Beach and Santa Monica and most recently in London, Paris and NYC/ SoHo. I am still showing in London thru my PR group The POP Group UK
And of course …All of my pieces are “one of a kind”
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Trying to enter a market that you have no connection to is never smooth or easy. Especially when you design and make every piece by hand. To be successful, you need champions supporting your efforts in media and PR. PR support can be expensive and when you are not selling yet, it can be daunting. I don’t know if there is a defined road to success. I think a lot of luck helps and the harder you work the more luck you have. It also helps to be a good self-promoter which I struggle with. But my advice is to take every opportunity that you can. You never know who will be that person that opens the next door. Just don’t give up on your passion.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in one of a kind, sustainably created accessories, primarily jewelry,
I am known for my unique, out of the box and whimsical designs.
I am most proud of the fact that some exceptional people have found my products. I am not known to be an extremely social person. I have an artists personality. Very private. It always surprises me to see how far a reach my pieces have made.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I’m happiest when I see someone wearing my work or photographed wearing it. Anytime someone chooses PK BIJOUX over Gucci, Prada and LVMH it makes me smile. I know that is an artistic person that “gets it” and chose something very special. Its also a thrill to hear from my clients that my jewelry is their husbands or partners’ favorite, or just seeing how any of my clients of any designation have interpreted how they want to wear it. My clients surprise and educate me :)
