We were lucky to catch up with Leambrea High recently and have shared our conversation below.
Leambrea, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
As an intern in college, I dreamed of starting my own practice. My goal was to wait a few years after graduate school, get comfortable, and then start the journey. But of course, nothing went as planned. I started my practice sooner than planned, and it has been a great decision for my career. The main step for me to take was to actually take the step! I had so many “first steps” to take in my head, but I needed to take an actionable step. Once I made that decision to take action, it made everything real! The biggest challenges for me were filing paperwork to establish my PLLC and learning how to market effectively. My degree is in counseling, so I know how to be a counselor, but the business side to running a practice, I had no clue what to do. I had to do a lot of research, and reach out to mentors and colleagues. I believe God aligned everything in His perfect timing for me to be where I am today. If I would do anything different it would to have more confidence in taking the leap. Starting your own practice is no walk in the park, but it can be done. Do your research, reach out to trusted professionals and do what’s best for you!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Growing up, I had a passion for psychology. I’ve always wanted to know the “why.” Why do we behave certain ways? Why do we think a certain way? Having this desire to find out the why is what led me into my field. I believe that understanding ourselves and how our childhood and past impacts our today and future, will lead to a healthier lifestyle and improved mental health.
After years of school and gaining experience in the field, I graduated with my master’s degree and received my license.
I specialize in helping individuals and couples navigate anxiety, relational conflict, and unhealthy communication. I believe it’s important to identify the root of disconnect in relationships—so people can feel secure, supported, and connected, which result in a better quality of life.
As both a wife and mother, I understand the emotional weight that comes with relationship and parenting challenges. Navigating day to day life while wearing many different hats (student, employee, parent, spouse/partner, boss, etc.), can be exhausting. I want people to know that I hear you and see you. The greatest part of this work to me, is being a guide to help clients reach their peace in life.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your firm or practice?
Funding my business was not as expensive as I thought it was going to be. After paying for the essentials, filing paperwork, domain, website, etc. the next big thing was office space. I toured a few different spaces and found something affordable. I had some money saved up from past jobs that I used for my deposit and other office expenses that helped me until I started making money through the business. Having that money saved up and the support of my husband, helped me get started.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Something I have learned over the past few years is the value of connecting with others. Making connections with other professionals in my profession and outside of it, is truly important for your reputation and referrals. Networking and going out in the community have helped me build my reputation as a counseling professional.
